On Wednesday 26 July students in grades 3 and 4 participated in Hoop Time, a basketball competition at Nunawading Basketball Stadium. All teams played 5 games each and enjoyed many wins. The students should be very proud of their teamwork and sportsmanship.
In Inquiry this term the Prep students are exploring living things. To support this learning, in visual arts we have been looking at illustrated books about plants and how they grow. The Eric Carle book “Tiny seed” relates the journey of a seed as it flies on the wind through different environments finally settling in fertile ground where it grows into a beautiful flower.
The class had a great discussion about the conditions seeds need to flourish, they also talked about the fantastic illustrations in the book and then went on to make their own images of the beautiful flower using a similar style to Eric Carle. They really enjoyed painting their own coloured papers before cutting out shapes to form their final flower images.
Here is a sneak peak of our school production poster. Thank you to Esmond D and Delphine for putting this amazing design together.
We have some new friends in the STEAM room. They are Spiny Leaf Insects. The children from every grade were fascinated with them.
The preps have been busy looking at different objects around the school and what they are made of. They made a map of where the objects are found around the school and then described them. In class this week, the students then found an object around the room and we discussed what it was made of and used some describing words for them - were they smooth, rough, bumpy, large or small?!
The grade 1s and 2s are busy making potions from mixtures (sorry about the mess everyone!). This week we looked at what the wizard's potion was. It was hard if we stirred it quickly, but soft when we stirred it slowly!
In grade 4, they have looked at what happens to objects when they are warmed, cooled, and frozen. Some of our objects turned from liquid to solid, but some stayed the same. The students presented their findings and produced a storyboard showing what happened. They then played a game of freeze and melt!
The grade 5/6 classes continue investigating the VexGo robotics kits and coding on Tynker. Some students have enjoyed creating their own Mars buggies with interesting effects!
