100 Days of School Celebration!

Last week the F/1 students celebrated 100 days of school. It was a much anticipated event as the students had spent time each morning discussing how many days had passed, how many remained, colouring graphs and representing numbers in various ways. The whole day was a roaring success with students dressing up like they were 100 years old and having a parade through the classrooms. They read Tim Minchin's "When I Grow Up," and wrote about the things they will do when they are grown ups. Next they did some tie-dye socks with their buddies because we are 100 days "brighter." After recess the long awaited screening of our class novel "Charlotte's Web" proved to be a hit, although many students were disappointed that the movie wasn't quite the same as the book we read. During this time we made fairy bread with 100's and 1000's and ate rainbow cupcakes that Mrs Smith's sister (a past Newham student) made for us. We had outdoor games to burn off the sugar and in the afternoon we did some partitioning, representing and sharing maths activities with the 100 items we brought to school. All in all, it was a wonderful day to celebrate being at school for 100 days! Now (for our foundation students) we only have 2400 days of school to go!

City Camp

What a camp! Newham PS students showed our values as we walked many kilometres around the streets of Melbourne. We were so impressed with their positive engagement with each other, adults and the places we visited. Check out a couple of their recounts and many photos below. Thank you so much to Sarah, Paul, Bec and Ginger for their invaluable support.

MCG

Last Thursday, Grade 3-6 went to the MCG. First, we went onto, yes onto, the MCG ground. It felt like luxury. Then we headed to the big and bulky club rooms, I felt really overjoyed. After, we headed upstairs to the sports library. Then we took an elevator to the top floor and went to look outside. By the way, it was an awesome view. Overall it was a dream come true because I love footy so so much. - Jai

Ice Rink

Going ice skating was the best thing on camp. When Grade 3-6 went on the ice skate arena it was very slippery. We did a 10 min lesson learning some basic skills like going forwards, turning and stopping. When the lesson was finished, we had free play. I fell badly on my knee so I had to get sent off. Ice skating was hard but fun too. - Cam

NAIDOC week - National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Children's Day

Children's Day is celebrated across the country each year on 4 August. National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day is a time for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities to celebrate strength and culture. All Australians have the opportunity to show their support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, as well as learn about the crucial impact that culture, family and community play in the life of every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child.

Here at Newham Primary School we celebrated indigenous culture and children in the following way.
