🌟 Celebrating NAIDOC 2023: 'For Our Elders' 🌟

In the last week of Term 2, our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and families came together for an informal meet and greet afternoon tea. It was heartening to witness so many families present. We hope to make these gatherings a regular occurrence in the future.

With the talents, artistic flare and designing from Kate Sullivan and Drew Craig, students had the opportunity to add their own flare in a collaboration art piece. Creating a contemporary Indigenous art masterpiece. Thanks to Uncle Nev and Amanda Gwalters for their expertise guidance with the Cultural aspect in the creation of our mural.

Week 1 of Term 3 marked our magnificent NAIDOC 2023 celebrations, centered around the theme 'For Our Elders.' The event showcased the profound impact of Indigenous elders on our lives and community. From engaging religion classes that emphasised the vital role of elders in preserving culture and traditions to fun activities during recess and lunch, including a friendly Oztag game, our students reveled in the spirit of togetherness and unity. Our Cultural Dancers showcased their talents at St Nick's Assembly where we had the honor of witnessing a smoking ceremony led by Athol Munro.

For our MCC Assembly , the symbolic smoking ceremony, conducted by our Elder Uncle Nev Sampson & Athol Munro, set a powerful tone for the event. We were privileged to have Amanda Gwalter as our guest speaker, music performances by Lawson Thompson & Ronny Rindo and captivating dances by our Cultural Dancers. The power of unity and the beauty of our traditions were on display through the Contemporary Cultural dance, reminding us of the strength that lies in embracing our heritage. It was inspiring to see our Senior Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students leading the assembly with pride. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the school and wider community for their continuous support, not only during NAIDOC week but throughout the year.

Let us carry the spirit of NAIDOC 'For Our Elders' with us every day, by honoring our Indigenous elders not only through celebrations but also through our actions and words. Together, we will continue to build a brighter, more harmonious future for all.

Congratulations to the well-deserved recipients of the NAIDOC awards: Anika Boney, Milley Macey, Chloe Jones, Koora Gillion, Keely Nash, Savannah Slater, Indi Brazier, Stella Stanwix, Layla Dobson, Mackenzie Lett, Seb Lawler, and Hallie Munro. Additionally, a special shout-out to Ethan Ross, the recipient of the prestigious PERPETUAL NAIDOC CULTURAL AWARD.

In another significant moment during NAIDOC 2023, Ashlya Strudwick made her debut. This event not only celebrated Ashlya's personal milestone but also beautifully merged her deep cultural roots with the occasion. Embracing her Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage since childhood, Ashlya's debutbecame a testament to the strength and resilience of Indigenous cultures.

Throughout NAIDOC Week, the GCA members demonstrated exceptional dedication and support, actively participating in various events. We are proud of our students and their families who also contributed to NAIDOC events in their local communities.

As we celebrate the arrival of new life, we extend warm congratulations to Mrs. Olivia Gilbert/Ussher and her husband Angus on the birth of their precious baby girl, Kalialah Bell Ussher, born on 25.7.23.

While Mrs. Ussher enjoys her maternity leave, we welcome Mr. Bernie Williams as the new Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Focus Teacher.

Additionally, we are excited to announce the upcoming "Warraymalaya Maal Dhuw" retreat, an Armidale Diocese Catholic Secondary Schools Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Retreat. Aimed at Year 8 - 9 students, this retreat will provide an empowering and supportive experience for our Indigenous youth.

Lastly, we wish our Year 12 students the best of luck as they prepare for their HSC exams following the completion of their HSC Trials in Week 3 & 4.

Let us continue to celebrate and honor the rich heritage of our Indigenous communities, fostering a culture of unity and respect at McCarthy Catholic College. Together, we stand strong, embracing our traditions and forging a brighter future for all.

Until next time!
