CBCA Book Week – Read Grow Inspire
Book Week is celebrated throughout Australia from Saturday 19 August to Friday 25 August. During this time, schools and public libraries promote our Australian authors and illustrators and the importance of reading.
Students and staff at Cranbourne Secondary College are invited to collect a leaf in their House colour and to write the name of the book, the author and how it inspired them.
We hope to see our Cranbourne Secondary College Library Tree covered in House coloured leaves by the end of term 3. A great way to celebrate CBCA’s Book Week theme – ‘Read Grow Inspire’.
Book Club
Book club members have been busy reading and reviewing CBCA’s Older Readers category to assist in the shadow judging of these shortlist books. They will also meet with the author, Leanne Yong, online to help them to judge a good book. This will take place on Wednesday 2 August at lunchtime in the library. With Library and Information Week being celebrated from Monday 31 August to Sunday 6 September, this is good timing for an author visit.
Leanne Yong is an Asian-Australian YA author who enjoys talking about game and puzzle design. She also owns and designs a popular Sydney escape room, Next Level Escape. Leanne promotes writing with your own voice. Leanne Yong’s, Two Can Play the Game, has recently been added to our collection.
Malala Day
The library promoted Malala Day early this term to celebrate the importance of education, books, and writing, particularly for the marginalised.
VHAP Term 2 Celebration
Our high-ability students for term 2 were treated to a special morning tea and presented with certificates of participation at the end of last term. They were encouraged to invite a friend to join in with the celebration. Our principal class attended to congratulate the students and to hear about how the program has challenged them.
To enable our students to reach their full potential, including high-academic students, the Department of Education has introduced the Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP) initiative as part of the Student Excellence Program.
This FREE program is designed to stretch and challenge high-ability students’ minds and stimulate their critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity in English and mathematics without accelerating them through the core Victorian Curriculum.
High-Ability students are encouraged to participate in Masterclasses where they can meet with other students in the program and collaborate in inquiry-based workshops. In term 2, the high-ability students visited Cranbourne East Secondary College and explored Banned Books and Safe Storytelling with ABC Takeover. This term, they are invited to attend a BioEYES+ an inquiry-based, hands-on science incursion where students conduct their own investigation into biomedical science using live zebrafish.
