Aboriginal Youth Leadership Forum

A select group of students have recently begun their participation in an Aboriginal Youth Leadership Forum, developed in conjunction with the Kadadjiny Aboriginal Corporation. The leadership program is open to Aboriginal secondary students (15 years and above) in the Great Southern region and is designed to develop student confidence and leadership skills, including governance, and also aims to broaden student networks, knowledge of initiatives, events, jobs and projects in the Great Southern.  Our students, Sienna Ugle, Faith Bin Omar, Chenae Wreford, Kevin Sibosado and Wayahpo Manolis are participating in the forum which will run over the coming weeks.

Commencing last week at GSG, the program commenced with a Welcome to Country from Aunty Vernice Gillies and guest speaker Molly West, a youth ambassador for Prepare, Produce, Provide, along with Evelyn Lee Collin, Djinda Ngardak Program Director. After yarning about leadership and development, sharing stories from Aunty Vernice and doing a school tour, Molly shared some insightful and inspiring words about her experience as a youth leader and a business owner.  Find out more about Molly here Youth Ambassadors — Prepare Produce Provide

We are looking forward to participating in the rest of the program, as students will guide the content they want to discuss in the meetings and who they would like to invite as guest speakers. The program will be supported by Kadadjiny staff and board members along with community and school leaders.

Attendance reminder

A reminder to advise us of your child's absence by using the GSG app or emailing absentees@gsg.wa.edu.au.  Please don't reply to a previously sent absentee SMS.  Please avoid emailing your child's teacher to advise of an absence as the start of the school day is a busy time and these emails are not always able to be passed on to our administration staff in time to be considered for the reconciliation of absences.

Support for mental health - headspace

We are very fortunate to have support and advice from headspace Albany, with whom we have a strong relationship.  Yesterday morning, the Pastoral Committee was visited by Andrew Wenzel and Carl Heslop from Albany headspace, who shared with us the many services and support opportunities that young people and their families can access.  For more information please see the Wellness Centre page.
