Prep
Maths
How many spoonfuls will I need? In Maths, the Preps are exploring and investigating the concept of the capacity of an object. In pairs, they estimated how many spoonfuls of sand would be needed to fill the container. Then the students counted the spoonfuls into the container and decided whose estimation was closest to the actual amount of spoonfuls. They used words such as empty, half-full, full, wide, tall and short to describe the capacity of their containers.
100 Days of Prep
On Friday, 04 August, the Prep students celebrated 100 Days of Prep! Since the start of the year, we have been counting up to 100 days. This celebration coincided nicely with our Inquiry unit, called Change. The students reflected on how they have changed since starting Prep. Many commented that since starting Prep, they have celebrated a birthday, some have grown taller, they know how to add numbers together, write words and learn about Jesus. The Preps were all invited to bring a bag of one hundred objects to school. What does 100 look like? They also enjoyed a Toy Incursion and investigated how toys have changed over the centuries and decades. The Year 6 students also enjoyed celebrating the day with their Prep Buddies. Miss Becc and I look forward to many more days of learning with the Preps.
Feast Day of St Mary MacKillop
The Prep and Year 6 students participated in the mass on Tuesday morning. The mass celebrated Saint Mary MacKillop and her devotion and commitment to helping the poor and those in need. Thank you to Aiden, Slate, Remy, Henrique, Jake, Anton and Jonathan for participating in the Prayers of Intercession and Offertory.
Inquiry
I wonder what will grow? This is our wondering question. In Inquiry, the students have hypothesised what a seed needs to grow, how a seed might change, and what might grow from the seed. The students have planted a bean seed in their greenhouse. Each day they use their scientific eyes to see if any changes have occurred in their greenhouse. We are also trying to grow a plant from vegetable cut-offs. During this unit, the students have watched time-lapsed videos of the life cycle of a butterfly, the baking of a cookie, and the growth of Lotti from birth to 21 years of age. These videos have prompted rich discussions about how living objects or mixtures change. The Preps look forward to sharing with you the changes take will take place with the bean seeds.
