FEAST OF SAINT MARY MACKILLOP

A new era came to education in Boggabri with the arrival of the Sisters of St Joseph. In 1910 Fr. James Walsh had a Convent built in Boggabri and the Sisters took up residence in 1911.

One of the primary reasons for the Sisters coming to Boggabri was to provide education for the Catholic community. The Sisters set up a school in the old wooden church which was built in 1886. From 1916 until 1918 the Sisters also conducted school in the old church until the first school was built in 1918.  We should remember that these early Sisters would have known Mary of the Cross (Saint Mary MacKillop) personally and would have been imbrued with her great spirit.

Saint Mary MacKillop had a vision to send the Sisters of St Joseph to Boggabri to provide the community with a wonderful school, now known as Sacred Heart School ~ still providing quality education 112 years on.

Saint Mary MacKillop knew that the best way to lift communities out of poverty was through education. You are invited to celebrate the Saint Mary MacKillop Feast Day with us this Tuesday 8 August at 12:30pm in the church.
