Multiple Exposures

This photo deserves a double take!

It is official, in the Term 3 holidays Newlands will be providing families the option of utilising a School based holiday program. The school will be using the external provider TeamKids, who will be working closely with our OSHC team to ensure the school provides a quality and engaging program. I would like to thank Jill for her tireless work in the OSHC and ensuring that the options that we provided to School Council were of quality. A big thank you to school council, who gave up their Friday afternoon to make a decision! This is very exciting for our community.

While Newlands Primary School would once again like to reiterate that NAPLAN is just a moment in time and has no impact on the day to day teaching at our school, our results have improved in relation to our data against our Network. I’d like to thank all the teachers for all their hard work and dedication! The grade 3 data, our second official Bilingual cohort, reinforces the research that a second language of learning does not negatively impact English learning. I would like to thank all of the teachers at Newlands for their tireless work in ensuring that our program is not only engaging but is meeting the needs of our students. The school will continue to develop staff in areas that have been identified during last year’s School Review. Individual reports should arrive at school in the next two weeks which will be given to students to pass on to their families in an enclosed envelope.

We had visitors from Fitzroy North Primary School come in to see our Builders Program this week. The feedback from their leadership team was very impressive on how well students were engaging in their learning and how the school was providing opportunities for our students to develop the Newlands Keystones. It was great to see our students working with patterns by making bracelets, using colours, numbers and various rules as well as excellent workshops in both Spanish and English. I would like to thank Sophia, Katherine and the F/1 team for opening up their classroom. It is great to have visitors come into our school to show schools how our philosophy of education looks in the classroom.

In Inquiry this week, there have been some suitcases delivered by the Melbourne Museum. Inside these suitcases are a range of artefacts which have sparked a lot of discussion in the 2/3 area. There was everything from a Japanese dictionary, a carved wooden hippopotamus and a range of jewellery. This provided students the opportunity to discuss their thinking on why these objects were in the suitcase as well as share their knowledge on what they knew. Students were asking questions and working together to find out as much information as they could. The students will be making their own suitcases in the coming weeks!

Students in 4/6 have come back from camp and have gone straight back into classroom life. The students are talking about money! It’s really great to see students converting Australian Dollars and other currencies using different strategies to solve problems. I would also like to thank Tolly, Rafael, Woody and Alfie whom have been all involved in creating event posters for all of our term 3 events! Finally, the Grade 4/6 teachers are giving up their Sunday to raise money for the Grade 6 Graduation and Big Day Out at Bunnings this Sunday. If you need to buy some timber or Selly’s No Gaps – come down to Bell Street Bunnings for a sausage. In Spain, does the onion go on top of or under the sausage?

Luisa hasn’t stopped. Our Spanish Leader has organised a Spanish afterschool games session with the Spanish Sub Committee, and is continuing to ensure our Spanish sessions after school for parents continue. Once again there will be another evening of Spanish food, drinks and conversation. Finally, we are beginning the process to become a part of the ISA (International Spanish Academy), which will make our school recognised worldwide. We want to thank Luisa for all of her work in ensuring our Spanish program continues to strengthen.

The office has finally worked through all the phone calls for our Foundation families for 2024. The school has received an incredible amount of enrolments and we are excited to begin our Term 3 transition process with everyone!

Just a reminder to our F/1 families, the 100 days of school is next Monday! We look forward to seeing your future selves performed by your children!

Have a great weekend and go the MATILDAS!

Thanks,

Luke
