HAPE Week Reflection

HAPE Week Reflection

Health & PE week at Staughton College ran during week 8, from the 4th – 8th September. The main message was to encourage the value of participating in sport and physical activity for a healthy body and mind. Staff facilitated a variety of activities and competitions over the week.

Monday kicked off the program with the college’s inaugural running of the Monday Mile. Malou Lueth of Year 11 ran 6:14, closely followed by Riel Mayuom of Year 12, taking second place with a running time of 6:20. Jack Darling of year 8 wasn’t far behind, crossing the line in a respectable time of 7:00. Students were also able to quench their thirst with healthy smoothies on the day, graciously supported by Del-Re National Food Group who provided all the milk and ice-cream required.

Tuesday saw students and staff battle it out in a game of volleyball, to which ultimately allowed teachers the bragging rights winning convincingly 25-16. A huge thank you to the staff who played: Mr. Collins, Mr. Cini, Mr. James, Ms. Forlani, Ms. Cooke and Mr. Synaphet. Best on ground performances by the students went to Mosese Falefoou and Halina Tavita-Alama.

Wednesday’s activity was a lunchtime boot camp, offered by a visiting Genesis Health Club instructor. Students muscled out a range of exercises with many rewarding their efforts and topping up the glucose levels with chocolate giveaways. Jade Strawbridge and Temesgen Kibreab were voted the hardest working male and female students during this session and should be commended for their efforts.

Thursday provided students a space to showcase their ‘groove’ thanks to student dance choreographers Chelsea Lapsley and Shaylyn Camelleri. Congratulations to Natalina Mariak who was rewarded a Coles Myer gift card for an outstanding performance.

The footy target kicking competition attracted great participation. Many students managed to score despite the very windy conditions. The overall winners on the day were Kirimoo, Nixon, and Liam all on 5 points with Craig, Taj, Temesgen, Allanah, Dylan and Destiny all scoring but not enough to take the title. Well done to all involved and congratulations to our three winners!

The celebration concluded with the annual Sports Jumper Day. Students were invited to wear a sports jumper for a gold coin donation, with all funds collected going towards new sports equipment and our upstairs gym refurbishment.

VCAL also contributed to the festivities by holding a BBQ, which was possibly their biggest fundraiser of the year! Mr Mills coordinated a small scale Beep Test Competition for two motivated students. James Taylor worked hard achieving a new personal best, but ultimately the endurance of Blake Thompson allowed him to go on and claim Beep Test Champ with a score of 11.8.
