Home Reading Practices
St Philomena's School values, supports and encourages reading practices both at school and at home. In 2019, Stage 1 (Year 1 and 2) will continue a structured home reading program, while Stage 2 and 3 are encouraged to record their home reading practices using the school Home Reading Log. The aim of our home reading program is not for children to read more difficult books as quickly as possible, but rather to enjoy reading and being read to, whilst practising some of the skills and strategies they have learnt at school.
The ‘Helping Your Child To Read’ booklet is emailed home in Kindergarten and is also attached below for your reference. It contains useful information, strategies and tips for you to help your child when reading. A good procedure for home reading (particular with younger students) is for the adult to first read the book to their child, then read it together and finally, ask your child to read it independently to you.
We thank you in advance for your assistance with facilitating reading at home. In order to foster enjoyment and gains in your child’s reading, the signing of the reading log by both parents and teachers, demonstrates the value we collectively place on reading. When students reach 100 nights of reading, they will receive an award at assembly to celebrate and recognise their efforts and achievement.
