YEAR 10 LEGAL STUDIES

YEAR 10 LEGAL STUDIES
It was enlightening to have Bob Turner visit the two Year 10 Legal Studies classes last Wednesday afternoon, 13th September. He provided a positive spin about Melton and talked about his active involvement in the community as both a councillor (and ex-Mayor), current local community member on Staughton College Council and his not-for-profit business called the Gap on Graham run entirely by volunteers. Interestingly, The Gap provides a range of services and facilities to Melton’s youth including a boxing gymnasium and boxing ring to encourage and promote the values of personal fitness and self-discipline. Bob’s talk tied in really well with our unit on Australian Democracy where we discuss the role the local council plays in Melton and encourage students to take an active interest in their local area and its issues. Examples of issues raised was the controversy about whether to stop the expansion of the local Ravenhall tip, the growth in population and its impact on services and facilities and VLine versus a Metro line. Bob mentioned many areas that the City of Melton were involved in which the students did not even realise. We thank Bob for taking the time out of his busy schedule to come and talk to us. A positive role model of someone who cares about the place he lives in and is trying to make a worthwhile difference. Good on ya’ Bob!
