Course Selection

Years 9 to 12

During Term 3 all students choose their subjects for Years 9 through to 12 for 2017. Students in Year 9 have just completed the Careers Fasttrack three stage Program and are now working through a Pre-Course Counselling Assignment in their Learning Manger Groups. After completing this exercise, students should be clear what subjects they wish to choose for Year 10 and beyond.

On Thursday 9th June all Year 10 students completed a Holland Careers Self Directed Search Task in class. This builds on the work they completed in Year 9 and they followed on from this by completing a Pre-Course Counselling Assignment on Thursday 23rd June. This enables them to make informed choices with subjects that they need to take in order to reach their desired pathways and alerts them which tertiary providers offer courses in these fields.

Year 11 students are also working on a Pre-Course Counselling Assignment just to confirm they are on the right track with pre-requisite subjects for any tertiary courses they will be applying for next year.

Course Selection Handbooks are being given to students at Parent Information Evenings and assemblies.  Parents must sign two pages of these books to endorse their child’s course choices and mathematics pathway.

Course Selection Days are:

Year 11 into Year 12 – Tuesday 2nd August

Year 10 into Year 11 – Thursday 4th August

Year 9 into Year 10 – Tuesday 9th August

Each student is allocated an individual 15 minute course selection interview time; the appointment times are noted on the front of their Course Selection Handbooks - parents are most welcome to attend. Students bring the signed, completed Course Handbook to their interview.

Year 8 into Year 9 – Students will be seen in their classes during 15th – 26th August.

Year 12 – Tertiary Application Period

Year 12 students have been preparing for their tertiary application period. On Thursday 14th July all VCE students attended the annual Tertiary Information Session at Victoria University. They had a brief presentation about the application process and were able to speak with and collect materials from representatives from many tertiary providers. We will be running another session for VCAL students at school shortly.

On Monday 1st August the VTAC online application process opens. We sent some preparation work home with all Year 12 students during the last term break. All students should be now researching courses they may like to apply for. All tertiary institutions will be having open days on Sundays during August (Swinburne is 31st July). All year 12 students receive a publication ‘Careers News’ from the Careers Department regularly – the Open Day dates are published in these. Please remind your Year 12 child to be reading these emails.

Once the application process is open students can select courses and make scholarship and Special Entry Access Scheme applications. They are encouraged to visit our office to discuss this process and seek assistance to get the best outcome. The last day the school can offer assistance with this before these applications close is 16th September (last day of Term 3), so students are encouraged not to leave this until the last day!
