Middle School Report

Welcome back to Term 3. This term will be a busy one for students in both Year 9 and Year 10 with a focus on careers and pathways for 2017. Year 9s have already started their course counselling assignment and many of them have met with a careers advisor for a Fast Track interview. Year 9s will also be spending time in their Humanities classes this term preparing for the City Experience to take place at the beginning of Term 4.
Year 10 students have just completed two weeks of work experience and will return to school on Monday 25th July. Teachers have been visiting students at their work placements to interview them about their job roles. There have been some very positive reports from supervisors who have praised the commitment, enthusiasm and communication skills of many of the students. It has been an excellent opportunity for the students to develop their work related skills, and many of them are now in the process of pursuing part time work.
Year 9 Important Dates
- Year 9 into 10 Course Counselling – Tuesday 9th August.
Students will receive an appointment time when they will meet with either their Year Level Coordinator or another member of staff. During this time, students will discuss their subject choices for 2017. There are no timetabled classes on this day, and students are only required to attend their appointment. We ask that they arrive at least 15 minutes before their scheduled time. Parents are invited to attend if they wish.
Year 10 Important Dates
- Parent Information Evening – Thursday 28th July
Year 10 students and their parents are requested to attend an information evening about VCAL and VCE choices for 2017. This will be an opportunity for students and parents to ask questions about pathways for next year, as well as find out important information about the transition to the Senior Sub School next year.
- The VCAL information session will be held in Nindethana from 6.00 – 6.30
- The VCE information session will be held in the Gym from 6.45 – 7.00
Students are invited to attend both sessions if they are not yet sure about whether to do VCAL or VCE in 2017. If a clear pathway is already in place, then students need only attend the relevant information session.
- Year 10 into 11 Course Counselling – Thursday 4th August
Students will receive an appointment time when they will meet with either their Year Level Coordinator or another member of staff. During this time, students will discuss their pathway and subject choices for 2017. There are no timetabled classes on this day, and students are only required to attend their appointment. We ask that they arrive at least 15 minutes before their scheduled time. Parents are invited to attend if they wish.
The Middle School team wishes you all a productive term and look forward to discussing your career pathways and subject selections with you over the next few weeks.
Year 9 Goals Program
The 2016 ABCN GOALs program is well underway with 20 students partaking in the program this year. The program aims at building and facilitating mentor relationships with people who work in a corporate environment. This Tuesday we braved the cold and trekked into the city for our second off campus session.
The focus for this session was, “everyone has something to contribute, if they will just give it a go. Through fun and allowing us to ‘play’ we learn about what we are capable of and learn more about those around us.”
Students and mentors participated in a range of activities that challenged them to think outside the square and collaborate on ideas. These activities included creating an event that would include all the groups’ interests and as teams completing a range of hands on tasks.
The students concluded the session by forming goals to achieve over the coming weeks and sharing their experiences of overcoming challenges with their mentor. The next session is coming up on the 18th of August and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
