WELC Report

Message from the WELC Coordinator

- Ms. Carmela Santucci

Westall English Language Centre has welcomed new students from China, Vietnam, Turkey and Somalia. At the beginning of the year, the teachers in WELC conducted activities so students could get to know each other and share their experiences of school in their home countries. The learning environment in WELC is supportive of students’ different backgrounds and language levels and provides for English language development that enables students to transition to a mainstream school with confidence and improved English language skills.

On Friday 15th February, all the Language Centre students attended Surf Life Saving Victoria’s Multicultural Beach Program. The program aims to teach students about water safety. Students learn how to recognize the dangers, how to stay safe when swimming at the beach and how to assist others who may need help.

Michael Masseni, from Life Saving Victoria, spoke to the students about opportunities for them to learn more about Life Saving. Surf Life Saving Victoria recruits and trains young people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Such training can lead to becoming a lifesaver at our local beaches and pools.

For all the students from Westall English Language Centre, it was an extremely informative day but most of all it was FUN!
