Connections

As social beings we are all hardwired for ‘connection’. We feel more at ease when we know that there are other people who ‘get us’. Being connected is about realising that we are part of something bigger; a community or group of people with whom we can identify. This connection provides a level of security and stability that helps us to not only be our authentic self but to take safe learning risks, to strive toward our dreams, and to thrive.

On Monday, I was fortunate enough to visit the idyllic surroundings of Forest Edge for the Year 7 Camp - the perfect spot for a short retreat from the classroom. Students and staff were fully engaged in all manner of outdoor activities, providing them with common experiences upon which to further develop their connections with each other and the St. Peter’s College community. The Year 7 Camp is one of a raft of transition activities specifically designed to help the new St. Peter’s College students connect with each other, with their teachers and to help them get a deeper understanding of their place in the wider St. Peter’s College and Christian communities. A smooth transition that helps our newest members to come to feel and know the inclusive nature of our Catholic school community, is pivotal for these young people, if they are to build the type of connections that will support them in the hard times and propel them in the good times.

An inclusive community, that promotes connection, that ensures that all members are looking out for each other, a community where no one is left behind, and where each person is encouraged to reach their ‘greatness’, is a community which is primed to enact the vision of “Faith, Education and Service”.
