FORENSIC SCIENCE

Year 9 Students and the Year 10 Forensic Science class were invited to solve a crime at MMCRC called a “Case of Conspiracy” -  brought to us by Hope from Education Interactive.

The Storyline: A new drug dealer on the scene is found dead and foul play is suspected. An 18-year-old boy is arrested for the murder which he claims to know nothing about. However, drugs, a gun and a stash of money were found at the home of the accused which all point to his guilt! This case highlights how the lure of drugs and easy money can lead to a web of deceit and betrayal.

The task: Students listened to the scenario and participated in a large group discussion exploring the crime and evidence. In small groups, they travelled between interactive evidence stations. Here students examined and interpreted the evidence which included fingerprint and handwriting analysis, micro-spectrophotometry data comparison, digital microscopy, arson investigation, ballistics, DNA profiling, blood detection, tyre tread impressions and digital evidence.

Students were successful in identifying the murderer and some even determined the motive.

Forensic Science is a great application of science in the real world where students are able to see the importance of scientific investigations, procedures and making evidence-based conclusions. Forensic Science and other similar fields of science and law are potential career pathways students may like to consider and explore further.

This incursion is a fantastic introduction to a science unit students will study in Year 9 called Forensics Science and an exploration of some of the topics already explored in the new Year 10 Forensic Science class.

SSV GIRLS FOOTBALL AND NETBALL

Intermediate Girls Footy

On Thursday 5th of May, a group of 22 Intermediate girls headed down to Wonthaggi Football Oval to compete in SSV Girls Footy. The girls played two games in the round robin against Leongatha High School (21 to 12) and Foster Secondary School (23 to 6). The girls came away winners in both games with some competitive footy being played. This meant the girls were in the Grand Final against Korumburra Secondary School. Spirits were very high and the girls were excited to be playing in the final. However, Korumburra SC were too strong on the day coming away with the win. We congratulate the girls on how they conducted themselves on the day and how they played as a team. It was a great day out for all.

Intermediate Girls Netball

On Tuesday 10th of May a team of 10 intermediate girls competed in the SSV Netball competition at LDNA Courts. The girls played 3 games against Foster SC, Bass Coast Wonthaggi and Bass Coast San Remo -  coming out easily on top against both Foster and Bass Coast San Remo. However, the game against Bass Coast Wonthaggi proved to be more challenging and our girls came up short this time, unfortunately. It was a great display of netball and both teams played very well together.

This meant the girls played in the Consolation final against Bass Coast Dudley who they dominated.

It was a great day out and all the girls showed great sportsmanship. Bass Coast Wonthaggi should be nervous for next year as the girls are coming back for redemption!

YEAR 10 DRAMA

The Year 10 Drama class performed their student devised play, "Echoes of Sorry," on Tuesday to all Year 7 students. The Political piece of Theatre carried a strong message for the up and coming, "Sorry Day" and "Reconciliation Week." It explored Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, the history of colonisation and the Stolen Generations. The play was set in a First Nations museum, where the artifacts came to life to tell stories from our shared Australian history.

A number of Mary MacKillop's First Nations students also came along to the show and shared their gratitude after the performance to the actors during question time. Lenna Scholmeyer expressed how meaningful it was to see such respect for her culture by acknowledging past injustices and working towards a true and authentic reconciliation.

Mrs Kavanagh and her Year 7 class gave a great review of the play and said, "Wow! Echoes of Sorry was fantastic. The plot, style, staging, characterisation and level of commitment of your cast was a joy. Congratulations to all of them for showing our 7’s and staff a great perspective on the time and continuing challenges, of those stolen and our whole society."

CLASS OF 2001 REUNION

On Saturday afternoon we welcomed back the Class of 2001 for a school tour. After a few delays due to COVID, the class of 2001 was finally able to get together and celebrate their 20-year (21-year) reunion.

The College has definitely changed since they were all here but many fond memories were reminisced whilst they were wandering the corridors. After the tour the group headed to Djinta Djinta Winery for the evening.
