Being Well at Magill

Reconciliation 2022

Hi all,

As you can see, Reconciliation this year begins today: May 27.

At Magill School, we are rising to the challenge of this year’s theme, to ‘Be Brave. Make Change.’ At our Junior Primary assembly this morning, children in Reception presented a song in Kaurna language. They have been working hard in preparation for today: to learn Kaurna words and develop an understanding that here in Adelaide, we live on Kaurna people’s land.

As a school, it has been acknowledged that many of our students did not understand the cultural heritage and history of the Kaurna people or why we acknowledge Kaurna Country at the beginning of meetings and gatherings.

We wanted all students at Magill School to be able to answer our 3 guiding questions with confidence and understanding relative to their age and stage of learning.

  1. Who are the Kaurna people?
  2. What is the difference between a Welcome to Country and an Acknowledgment of Country?
  3.  Why do we acknowledge this land as Kaurna Country?

During National Reconciliation Week 2021 a project was launched: a platform to begin exploring and unpacking the three guiding questions. As a school, our intention is to embed this knowledge as part of our teaching and learning practices on an ongoing basis.

As our learning journey continues,  students are discovering more about Aboriginal perspectives: learning Kaurna words, developing a better understanding of our 3 guiding questions and learning more about the history of Aboriginal people.

This year, we decided to raise funds for Children’s Ground, an organization led by Aboriginal communities, creating a new future for children filled with promise, hope and empowerment. Children’s Ground recognises the expertise of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge systems that have evolved for over 65,000 years. They are inspired by the talent and leadership of local people. They integrate cultural knowledge with international leading practice to enable excellence in learning, wellbeing and development for everyone.

On Friday 3rd June, Week 5 at Magill School, we are having a Casual Day. Children can wear something yellow and bring a gold coin donation: proceeds of which will be donated to Children’s Ground. We have a fundraising page on Facebook which people are also welcome to add to.
