Last week during Library-time, we read ' The Potato People' by Pamela Allen. We then made our own potato people; decorating potatoes with lots of interesting craft items. These 'people' will stay on our window ledge until there is a nice day for us to plant them in the garden. I hope we don't have to wait too long! As part of our topic on data we will also be making pizza. Children will be coming up with questions to ask their peers about the toppings and working out how to represent this information. We have already practised sorting all our shoes in different categories and representing this information/data in a pictograph.

Year 1 & 2

Last week we worked in teams to investigate what happens when rain hits different surfaces around our school. We made holes in paper cups to create our own rain. We then recorded our findings in our science journal. We could have waited until this week when it really did rain!

In maths we are trying to get super quick at knowing our number bonds (partners) to 10, 20 and 100. This helps us when solving all sorts of maths problems. Can you practise these at home to break your record?

With the colder weather now here, please make sure all jumpers, jackets and hats are named. We have a lot floating around without names.

Year 5 & 6 A/B

The Calder Winter sports was a great day for all! It was so pleasing to see all students from Grades 3-6 active in one of the sports (Minkey, Football, Soccer, Newcombe or Netball). The weather shone brightly and made for a wonderful day! It was pleasing to see all the children from our neighbouring schools getting together and sharing mixed teams on the day.

In Reading, all Grade 5/6 students have been working in Lit Circles groups (book group) and are reading the sequel to ‘The Wild Robot’, being the ‘The Wild Robot Escapes’ by Peter Brown. All students have been learning the Lit Circles roles as they read, complete comprehension and vocabulary tasks, work in small groups and discuss their favourite or interesting sections of the novel.

In Writing, students have been learning about the Australian Government, rights, Parliament and Federation. In doing this, they have been researching about a chosen topic and planning an Information Report. We look forward to all students demonstrating their excellent writing skills as they publish one narrative, one persuasive and one informative writing piece from Semester 1.

Our classes have all been separated into Zones Maths groups and learning about Addition and Subtraction skills and strategies. Learning has been effective in smaller focused groups with the ablility to zone in on individual children’s learning. Running parallel to this, all students have been involved in Applied Maths Learning sessions, where they discover temperature, shapes, graphing and data collection in the real world. It has been a fully engaging program so far and we all look forward to what comes next.

Inquiry has been very engaging the last few weeks. We have been learning about Renewable and Non-Renewable resources. This week, our students are working in small groups to make floating wind turbines. We look forward to seeing the interesting designs and constructions to allow their wind turbines to both float and stay stable on the water as the wind moves the turbine around.

On Friday the 17th of June, our Year 9 students have their Try A VET Day at NCTTC. On the day, students will try three different courses that interest them. For the students who are yet to complete their selection form, it is available on Compass. This form needs to be completed by no later than June 11th. VCAL Happenings

The Eucalyptus Distillery

On Friday 20th May 2022, Nathan, Clay and I went up to Hard Hill to assist in digging up the Eucalyptus distillery exhaust pipe using shovels and varyious types of tools such as a pickaxe, wheelbarrow and crowbar. We managed to dig it up with a couple of hours worth of work but were not able to remove it as we discovered the exhaust end pipe had been concreted in. Coincidentally when we had finished digging it up, the backhoe driver arrived to remove the Eucy pot. We have plans to replace the pipe, pot and fire box to allow the Distillery to be fully functional again.

V-Café – Term 2

This term in V-Café our winter menu consisted of hot chips, sausage rolls, pumpkin soup, rumballs, and hot chocolates. We made $112. 35. We delivered 46 serves of hot chips, 3 serves of pumpkin soup, 55 sausage rolls, 76 rumballs and 48 hot chocolates. Our biggest hit was the hot chips, hot chocolates, and rumballs. Next term VCAL will be doing a ‘Footy’ themed menu consisting of hotdogs and jam doughnuts.

VCAL is considering making something small every Friday so if you have any ideas of what foods you may want to purchase don’t be scared to let us know.

'Celebration of the Arts' Evening 2022

We are delighted to announce that on September 2nd, 2022, Wedderburn College will be hosting a ‘Celebration of the Arts’ evening, as a showcase of students’ skills and passions within all areas of performing arts.

Each student, from Foundation to Year 12, will be performing their class’s act, which will be selected with student input and facilitated by school staff. Students from Years 5 to 12 will also be invited to audition to perform on the evening as individuals or in groups. Google Forms will be provided soon to homeroom teachers for students to sign up to audition. Auditions will take place in Week 1 of Term 3.

We look forward to seeing the many talents that our students have to offer!
