S.T.E.M.

What we are learning about in S.T.E.M. during Term 2

Year 2

This term Year 2 students are learning about the origins, uses and properties of common materials. In this lesson we explored the different textures and features of a variety of common materials such as cotton, metal, ceramic, plastic, glass etc. In groups, students sorted the items into categories while discussing their similarities and differences and where these materials might be found at home and school.

Year 4

Year 4 students are investigating soil in Term 2. We started our unit by learning about how soil is formed and analysing soil samples from the school. We used microscopes to view the different components, listing and drawing what we saw. Students found sand, clay, living and dead insects, glass, brick, fertiliser, quartz, leaves, bark and a variety of other organic matter. We used our findings to compile a comprehensive record of all observed components and create our own class definition of soil.

Congratulations to Milla McDonald in 5SM who won the STEM raffle for the ‘Isle of Dogs’ watercolour painting.

Students in Years 3, 5 and 6 have been eligible to gain entries into the raffle by demonstrating initiative, effective teamwork or good work ethic.

Thank you to all students for their enthusiasm around this competition.
