Learning Enhancement

The school is delighted to announce the development of a new area to complement the support given through Learning Enhancement. The Cill Dara verandah has been transformed into a sensory space.

Students will be able to utilise the space under supervision.

The space will be utilised by students participating in life skills programs, Hands on Learning, Learning for Life and those with sensory needs.

We have included many pieces of gym equipment to be able to prescribe individual programs to students to access during their scheduled sensory breaks. With adult supervision and input from our occupational therapist we will be able to ensure that students will achieve targeted sensory input individualised to their needs. We will have equipment that will give 'heavy work' or joint input that can help our brains 'wake-up' and be ready to learn.

Not only can this equipment be tailored to 'wake' our brains ready to learn, we can also tailor the programs to target core, postural and upper limb strengthening to ensure that our students have the foundations for sustained table top tasks and learning. When our bodies don't need to work as hard, our brains can work harder. If we have a weak core and decreased postural support our brains need to work harder to 'keep us upright' and thus leaves less energy for learning.

Furthermore, the sensory space will also offer a calming, safe zone for those students who need some time to regulate their sensory or emotional needs. With the sensory garden and a yoga hammock, plus some big fluffy cushions and relaxation audio all on hand we hope to be able to offer a safe environment for students who need it.

Students are already taking the opportunity to use this new sensory space and it is hoped it will become a popular area and utilised to full potential.
