Library News

Our library is buzzing as usual with students and staff visiting for a variety of reasons: classes, study, tutoring, tests and SACs, printing, laminating, borrowing and returning books, borrowing equipment for period loans, finding a place to relax, meeting friends or seeking answers. The library staff are kept on our toes helping in any way we can, whatever the request.

Proving particularly popular is the library ‘joke of the day’ found at the circulation desk, and changed regularly. Are they as good/lame as Dad jokes? You can judge for yourselves with these examples:

Joke 1:
What’s the first question you should ask a librarian when entering the library?
How Dewey find the books?

Joke 2:
Why are librarians cautious about admitting accountants into the library?
They could cook the books.

 Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge 2022

St Joseph’s is delighted to announce that we are again participating in the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge in 2022.

The challenge encourages students to read a set number of books over the year and record their efforts online. Since the challenge first began in 2005, more than 3.5 million students have read over 54 million books.

In 2011, soon after Ted Baillieu was elected Premier, he invited all living former premiers of Victoria to lend their support to the Premiers’ Reading Challenge. From that day on, the challenge has been led by the premier of the day, and supported by all premiers, past and present.

Each child who completes the challenge receives a certificate bearing the signatures of the current premier and living former premiers. In addition to this, all St Joseph’s students who successfully complete the challenge will receive a $10 canteen voucher.

All of the students in Years 7 – 10 have received an email from Celine Bush, including information about the challenge and their individual log in details. We strongly encourage all students in these year levels to participate in this fantastic initiative.

The students are required to read 15 books by 2 September. These books can include their English texts, Reading Room books, personal collection and library books. Last year 60 students from St Joseph’s successfully completed the challenge. Let’s make it more this year!

Please email Celine Bush at cbush@sje.vic.edu.au if you would like more information or assistance with this. Celine would be delighted to hear from you or your child. The school librarians are also ready and keen to assist your child with selecting books for the challenge.
