Sport Captain

On Monday, around 50 girls were bused out to Limestone Park, Ipswich, to compete in the annual CaSSSA cross-country competition.  The girls had been training hard since early this year, three times a week.  The day started off with the 17+ years running four kilometres first, followed by each age group.

As it was many of the 17+ years girls' last race ever representing Mount Alvernia College, the nerves were high and so was the excitement.  The girls ran excellent on the day, with seven of them in the top 40 runners out of 60, as well as Lucy Bliss placing fifth overall.  It was a great way to start off a fun-filled day, as well as being amazing role models for the younger girls.

The 16 years were the next to race, this being the fastest race of the day with the winner completing four kilometres in under fifteen minutes.  The girls did amazingly keeping up with the steady pace, with four of the girls coming in the top 30 of the 60 girls as well as Ella Shakel placing eighth and Charlie Ryan thirteenth overall.

The 13s, 14s, and 15s had it tough as they raced in the blaring heat, close to the middle of the day.  However, the girls pushed through, representing Mt A with pride.  All the girls pushed themselves to the limit and not one gave up, all of them sprinting down the finish line.

The 12-year-olds were full of nerves as it was their first time representing Mount Alvernia and tackling a new course.  However, with team talk from our Cross Country Captains, they were all determined to run their best, and the girls did remarkably.  It was evident on their faces that every single one of those girls gave it their all, with four of them coming in the top nineteen, and Imogen Poole coming fifth overall.  Their age group finished third out of the seven schools.  All of these girls will have a promising future ahead of them in Mt A Cross Country team.

I honestly can’t express how proud I am of all of the girls for giving it their all throughout the day - not only running, but the spirit and cheer the girls had for one another.  The encouragement the girls displayed throughout the day was truly amazing and showed what’s Mt A is all about.  The Cross Country team was not only a team but a family.

The girls could not have done it without our amazing coaches - Shilo, Jacinta, Noel, Shan, and Mr White.  I can’t express enough how grateful we all are for them giving up their mornings, their commitment, and encouragement.  Lastly, to the Cross  Country Captains, Sophie and Chloe:  These girls have been captains for the past two years and they have led the team with determination and spirit.  They have been amazing role models who have represented the College with pride.  I applaud these girls for their time, effort, and commitment it took over the past year.

Congratulations to all the girls for their amazing effort and commitment over the past year, and a massive thank you to all the coaches and captains.  Bring on Mt A Cross Country 2021.
