MARIST COLLEGE ASHGROVE 1940 - 2020

Chaplain’s Corner: August

The month of August is dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament, and increased adoration of the Eucharist is encouraged. August is also dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and on August 15, the Church celebrates the Assumption of Mary into heaven.

At the end of John’s Gospel, on the last page of the last Gospel, the point is made that the world itself could not contain all the books that would have to be written to fully capture the life of Jesus. So, it is that the Catholic community, as well as building on scripture, has also put emphasis on the importance of tradition. Not everything the Church teaches is in the Bible. Some things belong to tradition. An example is the belief that Mary, the Mother of Jesus, was taken into heaven body and soul. It is hard to picture what this teaching, which is called The Assumption, might mean. But at least from the fourth century, many Christians have believed that Mary’s body was of such significance in the Christian story that it would not have been allowed to decay. The belief is one way in which ‘all generation have called me blessed’.

Mary, our good Mother, pray for us.
St. Marcellin Champagnat, pray for us.
St. Mary of the Cross, pray for us.
May we always remember to pray for one another.
