Respectful Relationships & Wellbeing

Supporting each other at home

As the lockdown continues we would like to offer families this resource to foster respectful relationships between family members. This section aims to provide simple and quick activities that students can do with their families to practice and reflect on their social, emotional and relationships skills. It helps to extend and reinforce the competencies students are learning as part of the Resilience, Rights, and Respectful Relationships program.

Year 7 & 8

Goal: Using our strengths to overcome

challenges.

Activity: As a family, talk about an instance when you had to overcome a challenge when you were young.

  • What were you scared of or worried about?
  • What qualities or strengths did you have to draw on?
  • What did you do/say to overcome the challenge?

Goal: Talking about the things that make us feel stressed.

Activity: Talk to your child about the stressors you experienced when you were young.

  • What were some positive ways in which you managed stress when you were young?
  • What are some things that concern them or cause them stress?

Year 9 & 10

Goal: Put stress management into action

today.

Activity: Brainstorm all of the activities you could do together today to help manage stress.

Negotiate and pick one, a time limit and when you will come together to practice it.

A few ideas to get your brainstorm started:

  • meditation
  • connect with nature
  • mindful - colouring

Goal: Recognise the people who help you.

Activity: Make a challenge as a family to thank a different person each day for something they have done to help you. It could be today, last week or a long time ago that they helped you with something big or little. Report back to each other who and why you thanked that person today.

Year 11 & 12

Goal: Making success scripts (goal: to understand and practice positive self talk).

Activity: Watch PBS Positive self talk clip

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSboXBkwpY0

Complete a self talk scenario with a family

member using suggestions or examples from the week – use ‘I am, I can I will…”

Goal: To identify personal strengths to support study.

Activity: Complete the character strengths online

https://www.viacharacter.org/survey/account/register

Encourage someone else (parent/carer) to complete the online character strengths and discuss results

  • How can your top 3 strengths support your study this year?
  • How can your parent/carer use their top 3 strengths to support your study?

Here's something from one our our students:

Hey everyone, I'm Ben!

The core of our little group is to promote wellbeing and mental stability for you. Whether you’re on school grounds or at home, we try to help you as much as we possibly can. That’s why I joined, because more than anything I love to help no matter what the task, but I always do it with a splash of my weird warm wacky “ben-ness” in it. While we are new and starting up, we have made great progress and planning into creating the Respectful Relationships wall in the library which we've named our “healthy relationships highway” which students will have a hand in making.

This will give students more of an idea of what wellbeing can help you with, along with many other helpful services that can help you or even someone you may know.

I strongly encourage you to really give a thought about wellbeing and joining respectful relationships (RR). No matter what, we welcome you with open arms.

p.s. It’s a little secret not known or been to by all students and it's called the sensory room. It's a space where you can come to and use with the permission of teachers and the lovely Teena and Nic, that allows you to release your stress through all sorts of stimulating toys. Did I mention a rocking chair?!. Maybe even talk to other people who may be in there for a mind break.

Give it a Shot!
