VCE & On-Site Learning

For our year 12 students, less than ten weeks of classes remain. We acknowledge the difficult circumstances under which they will be finishing their schooling and also the way they in particular have conducted themselves to date.

This term the General Achievement Test (GAT) will be held for ALL students doing a Unit 3 & 4 Study. Please note, this includes students doing an early entry Unit 3 & 4 at year 11, as well as all of our year 12 students. Coburg High School students who are studying a Unit 3 & 4 subject externally, will also be doing the GAT at Coburg HS.

The GAT performs a critical role in the VCE for students undertaking a Unit 3 & 4 subject. The General Achievement Test is a test of general knowledge and skills in these broad areas:

  • written communication
  • mathematics, science and technology
  • humanities, the arts and social sciences.

It is important that students note that GAT results:

  • do not count directly towards a student’s VCE results
  • help check that school-based and external assessments have been accurately assessed
  • contribute to statistical moderation of school-based assessment results
  • help calculate Derived Examination Scores
  • determine scores in school-based assessment, external assessment and if a derived examination score is required due to illness, accident and trauma.

As such it is extremely important that students take the GAT seriously and apply themselves in this assessment. This is especially so in 2020.

To support our students, we are running a GAT information session presented by Melanie Buscema-Moore: The information session will take place on Wednesday 2nd September, 1.30PM via a Google Meet through the VCE Support Google Classroom.

The GAT itself will take place on Wednesday 9th September, 10.00AM - 1.15PM.

We also take this opportunity to remind our students doing a Unit 3 & 4 subject this year, that practice exams will be held in the September school holidays. This offers an excellent opportunity for students to test their skills ahead of the end of year written exam period commencing on Tuesday 10th of November. The full VCAA exam timetable is available here.

Chemistry practical classes

Hello All,

We have been busy in VCE Chemistry this very very short term doing lots of exciting practicals!

The year 12's did a super job at their titrations using sodium hydroxide and ethanoic acid, displaying their flair with the burettes and graduated pipettes. It was great to see their enthusiasm despite knowing lockdown was looming. The year 11's were amazing and worked exceptionally hard in their acid characterisation practicals - great to squeeze in this laboratory experience before lockdown came. A big thank you to Lisa, our wonderful laboratory technician, who made our practicals possible. I would like to say how fortunate I am to have such fabulous VCE students, despite this extremely challenging time all are doing their best in their studies and I am very proud of all of them.

Keep Safe Coburgians!
