Yesterday's Hero

SHANE BEGGS

Years Played at the Club: 11

Best Club Achievement on the field:

2001 Premiership without a doubt!

Best Club Achievement off-field:

Surviving any footy trip, particularly 1998 when all my team mates turned on me after North Melbourne lost to Adelaide which was not great when you are in Adelaide. One of the great things to do as a group.

Most Outrageous thing done or seen within the four walls:

All the players drinking nude at the bar when we lost the 1999 Premiership to Berwick, happened late in the night after the game.

Best player played with:

Can't split Glenn Brown & Andrew Wisken

Best Club Memory:

Celebration of the 2001 flag, a lot of people behind the scenes put so much work in getting a side on the park each week. One big night followed by long days.

Favourite Barfly's:

Bill McKay, Trevor Snooks & Mark Joyce on the piss.

Originally from a small town near Benella, Beggsy moved to the Mornington Peninsula when he landed an apprenticeship at Bluescope. More renowned for his cricketing and golf prowess, is not an accurate assessment of this gifted sportsman. Beggsy was one of the greats to wear the black and white over an 11 year period. An inside midfielder who could rack up the possessions, Beggsy was a tough in and under player who possessed excellent decision making skills with precision execution, either by hand or foot.

Beggsy was and still is one of the most popular players at Crib and this can be attributed to his many nicknames, Begga, Beggsy or Darryl Somers to name a few. He loved everything about the club and was often BOG at many a club function.

A premiership player who was among the best at the 'big dance' and a best and fairest winner, Beggsy should be proud of what he has achieved.
