Dear Students, Parents, Carers and  Families,

COVID-19 Roller coaster of emotions

It’s OK!

Extreme situations like the one we are currently experiencing can bring out emotions and behaviours we are not use to. Trying to juggle your own work situation, the demands of “normal” family life, and remote learning is not always easy.

How each family is coping with home learning is different for everyone; some families are loving it, some not so much.

It’s OK if every day is not perfect. It’s OK if you decide that remote learning for the session/day is not working and everyone needs a break. It’s OK to have a bad day. It’s OK to start the next day of tasks without finishing the day before. It’s OK to improvise if you do not have all the specific materials required for a task. It’s OK to ask us for help and support.

The remote learning your child’s teacher provides is flexible so families can determine what works best for them.

We know everyone is doing the best they can as we ride this unpredictable roller coaster together…. it is definitely not a ride I want to go on again!

Pick your battles, because you will always be your child’s role model and teacher. And even if they refuse to comply today, there is always tomorrow.

MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL BEING CHECK-IN

Make sure you set aside time for family physical exercise, to make healthy snacks and have plenty of sleep. It is important to make time each day to check in on your child’s mental health and wellbeing.

As your child adjusts to their new routine and not being able to see their friends in person, it is important to be understanding of their feelings of frustration, anxiousness and even anger – every child will react differently.

To support your child, use these mental health and wellbeing check ins to:

  • Provide an opportunity to talk about how they feel and listen to what they say Identify one or two things they could do to address what they are concerned or angry about
  • Ask how they are going, whether they are finding it easy or hard to learn remotely, and if there is anything they would like your help with.
