Student Musings

Green Team News

The Green Team are running a competition for all students and staff!

During this time of COVID-19, but also during winter and the common cold, we need to take care of our immune system. One of the best things for our immune system is honey and the only way to get honey is from the generous bees. But do we think about what we can do for the bees in return?

Over the next four weeks, we challenge you to plant bee-friendly flowers in your garden or create a bee bath (like a birdbath with rocks and stick placed so they can land closer to the water).

Send us a picture of your efforts (jgodfrey@ringwoodsc.vic.edu.au or DM @rscsustainability on Instagram)

The Green Team will decide a staff and student winner and they will receive a $20 Bunnings voucher!

Passion, rigour and fun in remote learning

Despite the many depictions of remote learning as being horrible for students, parents and families many of the students have accepted the challenge and are using digital platforms to engage in the work just as they did in the physical classroom.

This morning 9I was involved in a chat where they were reflecting on their work for the week looking at the parallels between the treatment of Native Americans and Australia’s First Nations people. Here is a snapshot of the rich and relevant discussion. Our future is in safe hands!Start typing your article in here

Year 8 Indonesian

Year 8 Indonesian students have been learning how to express their heritage and where they come from. This week they were given a 'fake buddy' task where they were all assigned a buddy from overseas to introduce to the class.

They compiled their own paragraphs about their cultural identities alongside with that of their buddies and created these posters.

Well done 8B and 8J!

Remote Cross Country

A fantastic start to the 4 week cross country challenge. We have lots of entries coming in and it’s great to see so many students getting involved.

Stay tuned for Mondays update where we will announce which house is leading in the race around Australia.

We have the house cup up for grabs and age group champion medals.

Three weeks to go, get your entries in.

Middle School InterGREAT - Future Self

The focus of InterGREAT this term is Future Self.

This week, we engaged in online Morrisby Profiling. The Morrisby Profile is a tool that looks at students' interests and strengths. Each student will receive a strength-based report with suggestions of potential careers they may like to investigate. This will help them to become more self-aware and be able to research identified pathways and careers.

This is also a great opportunity for parents to encourage discussion with their child about subject selections for year 10. All students that completed their Morrisby Profile will have a virtual careers interview with an external career counsellor who will discuss the Morrisby Profiling and talk about potential options for the future pathway. These interviews will be conducted via laptop between August 3rd - 7th. Parents are welcome to attend the interviews also. You will be emailed the link information regarding the interview a few days prior to it. Please make sure that your child knows when their interview is scheduled for and remind them to attend at the required time.

One of the highlights of the Year 9 calendar is City Experience. This had previously been planned for late term 3. However, with the current situation we have decided to reschedule for a later date.

City Experience will now be taking place in the week of November 9th – 13th. Please stay tuned for further details and information towards the end of this term.

Further information will be sent out shortly about a partial refund on the InterGREAT Levy.

Middle School News

The Middle School team is being kept pleasantly busy as plans for subject selection into both Years 9 and 10 are underway. It is so important for students to look ahead and thoughtfully plan their futures – and now more than ever, the future is a thrilling and highly motivating concept. Our Head of Middle School, Kim Watson, with the support of the Coordination team, has carefully updated the Middle School Handbook which will be live today; we encourage families to take the time to examine this document to gain a better understanding of the opportunities available at the College. Please feel free to contact the Middle School with any questions or queries you may have about this exciting process.

Similarly, we invite our Year 9 and 10 students to contact their House Coordinator via email or Teams if they have any questions or concerns during this time – stay connected as best you can!
