Grade 1/2

Term 2, Week 7

Introducing our ladies....

The Grade 1 and 2 students put their ideas forward and we have now named our chickens in Cluckingham Palace. They do look awfully alike so don't worry if you think they are 2 sets of triplets!

Gardening Program

Students are continuing to enjoy our gardening program each week. Activities include weeding, planting and tidying up the garden beds. Those that aren't in the garden get to enjoy some gardening based literacy activities in the classroom. If you would like to help out during one of the gardening sessions, please let your child's classroom teacher know.

Reading and Writing

This week Grade 1 and 2 students have continued to learn about Procedural texts. We have been licking our lips and filling our tummies with fairy bread, pikelets and avocado dip as we write and follow procedures. Kids Art Hub drawings have also featured as we discovered that these too are a type of procedure! We know that procedures need a title, an aim, a list of ingredients and / or equipment and a method.

Maths

In Maths we continue working on Subtraction and have started a unit on Measurement as well. It's been terrific to see students so engaged in measuring items in the classroom, body parts and other objects. We were so engrossed ourselves as teachers, we didn't take any pictures to share this week!

To support the new learning in telling the time, please encourage your child to notice and read clocks around them. Help them notice hand positions, using terms 'half past', 'quarter past' and 'quarter to' and other ways to read time.

Also a useful link we posted last week for this long weekend if you are at home: Love Maths offers a range of games on their website that can be played at home as a family to assist with developing number sense (and have some fun!). https://www.lovemaths.me/games

Working together

We continue to work with students on social skills and responsibility. 2SB managed to fit in a short game of netball, ably led by students who finished their first netball season this week. It was so lovely to see their enthusiasm to teach their peers new skills and everyone's efforts were dripping with encouragement from the 'coaches'. Respectful behaviour in class is also highly valued and acknowledged as it allows all students to focus and complete their best work in a quiet work environment.
