Rugby Supporters Club Committee Fundraising Events

The St Pius Rugby Supporters club raise funds that go directly back into the rugby program. In previous years, the Supporters Club provided significant funds for external coaching, rugby specific physio, tour contributions, tour clothing and kit. etc.

In recent years due to COVID-19, fundraising was put on hold, meaning the club is desperate to re-coup funds to contribute again during the 2022 Season.

It was agreed that the three fundraising focuses this season would be a Monster Raffle, the Rugby Club Dinner (on Saturday 30 July) and the Golf day, held later in the year.

The success of these events relies on the support of everyone in the Rugby Community. Please support the events above through your attendance and through selling raffle tickets when they become available.

Another way you could help is by reaching out to your known contacts to donate prizes for the raffle and Rugby dinner. In the past, prizes have included accommodation in venues like Noosa and the Hunter Valley, services like photography sessions provided, not to mention memorabilia, tickets to events, toys or sporting gear for children, money can’t buy experiences with celebrities or adrenaline-based activities to name a few. The rugby supporters committee is asking the community to come together and consider how they, or someone they know could donate to these events.

Please contact myself mgillogly@stpiusx.nsw.edu.au or Rugby Club President Paul O’Neill: paoneill21@gmail.com if you can contribute in any way.

The firsts had a narrow loss despite Thomo Wilkins starting off the day well with a 3-0 victory. The seconds also lost despite Michael Krizan’s 3-1 victory and Matt Yee won 3-0 but wasn’t enough for SPX 3 to record a win. SPX 4 won on forfeit and SPX 5 lost despite a strong effort from Ben Mears.

All players are encouraged to keep up their skills over the holiday period by getting on the squash court!

CSDA Debating Competition

The undefeated teams for 2022, 10A & 12B moved through to the Elimination Rounds along with the teams who have won 4 from 5 debates:  7A, 9B, 11B & 12A.

Elimination 1 Round – Wednesday Week 8

We hosted zoom debates for the 7A, 9B, 11B & 12A teams in this Elimination 1 Round:

  • Year 7A team won against Holy Cross, Ryde, and moved straight to the Quarterfinals.
  • Year 9B won against St Patrick’s College and moved to the Elimination 2 Round.
  • Our Year 11B team, lost to Rosebank College and are out of the competition.
  • Year 12A won against St Paul’s, Greystanes and moved to the Elimination 2 Round.

Elimination 2 Round – Friday Week 8

We hosted Zoom debates for the 9B & 12A debates whilst 12B had a face to face debate:

  •  Year 9B won against Our Lady of Mercy College, Parramatta with Year 8 student (Michael Cheah) debating for Year 9 that night. They moved to Elimination 3.
  • Year 12A won against Marist Brothers’ Parramatta and have moved to the Quarterfinals.
  • Year 12B travelled to St Mary’s Cathedral School for the only face to face debate in these Elimination Rounds. They won and have moved to the Quarterfinals next term.

Elimination 3 Round – Wednesday Week 9

This evening we host two Zoom debates.

  • Year 9B, supported by our Year 8 debater (Michael Cheah), are against De La Salle College, Ashfield.
  • Year 10A will be debating against Patrician Brothers’ College, Fairfield.

Our amazing adjudicators worked so hard last week on some difficult debates and with some difficult convenors which is not pleasant. We cannot thank them enough for their mentoring and guidance of our students. Our adjudicators supported all but three of our debate events last week. Tonight, our adjudicators all have other commitments so we will be relying solely on adjudicators from other schools for the 9B and 10A debates.

Quarterfinals 22 July SO FAR…BUT WATCH THIS SPACE 😊

  • 7A will debate St Gregory’s College, Campbelltown A Team
  • 12A will be against Loreto College, Normanhurst A Team
  • 12B will be against St Patrick’s College, Strathfield B Team

Debating has been impacted by COVID for the last two years and it is a credit to our students and their amazing coaches:  Angelo Fernando (Yr 7), Joshua Jones (Yr 8), Ms Leigha Zervakos (Yr 9), Ms Natasha Foley (Yr 10), Mr Luke McManus (Yr 11) and Mr Ryan Balboa (Yr 12) that we have come back in 2022 with so many teams: Year 7,9,10,11 and 12, through to the Finals series. It is also vital to acknowledge Ms Bettina Spanyik, the Junior School Debating Convenor for the skill that the Year 7A debaters have displayed this year.
