Outside the Classroom
Year 9 Outdoor Education
Rock climbing excursion
The two year 9 Outdoor Ed classes recently travelled to the Latitude/Bounce rock climbing centre. The 35 students applied the knowledge from the "Technologies in the outdoors'' unit to safely and effectively participate in rock climbing. Some popular highlights include the ninja warrior wall and high ropes course. Students used intrinsic (personal-based motivations )and extrinsic (reward-based motivations) to overcome various obstacles. Some common obstacles included reaching the top of the wall. It was a great way to end the outdoor education elective and everyone had a great time!
Grampians Camp
Throughout the first several weeks of term 1, the two Year 9 Outdoor Ed classes spent their time learning valuable outdoor skills – such as cooking on a trangia and setting up a tent – in preparation for our three day camp in the Grampians. Then, in week nine, 35 students and four teachers headed off on the trip to the Grampians National Park. The experience was incredible, with each of us coming away with many different highlights from the camp. Some of those include hiking along the challenging but ultimately rewarding trails, experiencing the amazing views at the end of the hikes, crawling into and exploring caves, cooking together each night, intense games of uno, and sing-alongs on the bus ride to each location. All of us had an awesome time, and would do it again in a heartbeat.
Cycling day excursion
The 2 year 9 Outdoor Education students participated in a cycle day from school along the Merri Creek to the city and back again. The students were focusing on sustainable transport and the different ways people can get around and reduce their impact. All students had a great time together exploring the Merri Creek and enjoyed the day.
Leadership Camp
This week 42 student leaders attended the annual camp at Gundawindi Lodge in the Yarra Ranges. Highlights included leadership workshops from Project Rockit, a giant swing and flying fox, dressing up for the gala dinner and a ride on Puffing Billy. The aim of the camp is to give student leaders the opportunity to meet each other, reflect on personal values and develop the skills for school and community leadership. The photos below show some of the highlights. Many thanks to Lyn Camelliri, Ricelli Santos, Olivia Siciliano and Jaan Butler for attending.
Year 9 Melbourne Uni Excursion
Across Years 9 - 12, we aim to expose students to a range of tertiary education providers to build their familiarity with these institutions and encourage their aspirations. We recently went to Melbourne University. Students explored the Science Gallery, attended a study session, and enjoyed a scavenger hunt around the grounds.
Dance Showcase Evening
In Week 8, students from Year 8, 10, 11 and 12 welcomed friends and family to celebrate their achievements in Dance this Semester. Featuring VCE solos, student compositions and whole class routines, the evening was a testament to the hard work and dedication of our dance students. Congratulations to all performers!
CHS Musical: “The Legacy”
Our hard working performing arts staff and students have been busy rehearsing for this year’s original Musical: “The Legacy”. This year's production is a special one, as it's been scripted and devised with the students. All the music has been written and performed by our kids as part of the Kool Skools program earlier this year. There will be a live band, dance performances, and a stellar ensemble cast that will tell the story of the next Legacy!
