Berthe Mouchette Competition – 2022 theme is FREEDOM
Every year for over a century, millions of young Victorians have been bringing French poetry to life in the antipodes of France. The Berthe Mouchette Competition is a unique and memorable experience for the candidates, and it reinforces the vitality of French in Australia. At CJC, students from both programs, Victorian and French Binational were reciting their poems this morning. We wish them all the success that they deserve!

Expérience unique et mémorable pour les candidats, le concours Berthe Mouchette renforce la vitalité du français en Australie. But who is Berthe Mouchette?
The Berthe Mouchette Competition takes its name from the first president of the Alliance Française in Melbourne. But who is hiding behind this name from a past era? John Drury, a biographer who has done a great amount of research on Berthe Mouchette, says she was “a unique woman with a discreet but audacious nature for her time, and an artist in love with the French language and culture.” She was a French artist who arrived in Melbourne in 1882 with her husband and her sister, a French professor named Mademoiselle Lion. Berthe was a successful portrait painter and professor of art, and with her sister she bought a school for young girls in St Kilda in 1886. It was there that the first meetings of the Alliance Française were held in 1890. The sisters, Lion and Mouchette, formed the “Women’s Committee” of the Alliance Française, which brought together women of Melbourne’s bourgeoisie. Good teachers but poor managers, the two women had to close down their school, but by 1892 when Berthe Mouchette, a widow for eight years, moved with her sister from Melbourne to Adelaide, the Alliance Française of Victoria had become
a well-established institution. She stayed in Adelaide for thirty years and enjoyed a prosperous period in which she exhibited her works and held an excellent reputation amongst Adelaide’s high society. For the first years of the twentieth century, the two sisters were in India, taking an interest in theosophy and walking in the Himalayas! But after the death of her sister in Adelaide in 1922, Berthe Mouchette returned to France, where she died in 1928 in Normandy. Today, we can see one of Berthe Mouchette’s paintings at the National Gallery of Victoria.
Mais qui est Berthe Mouchette ?
Le concours Berthe Mouchette tient son nom de celui de la première présidente de l'Alliance Française de Melbourne. Mais qui se cache derrière ce nom venu d'un autre temps ? « Une femme unique, de nature discrète mais audacieuse pour son époque, une artiste, amoureuse de la langue et de la culture française », rapporte John Drury, biographe qui a fait de nombreuses recherches sur Berthe Mouchette. Artiste française, elle arrive à Melbourne en 1882 avec son mari et sa soeur, professeure de français, Mademoiselle Lion. Portraitiste à succès et professeure d'art, Berthe achète avec sa soeur une école pour jeunes filles à St Kilda en 1886, qui accueille les premières réunions de l'Alliance Française en 1890.
Les soeurs Lion et Mouchette constituent le 'Comité de Dames' de l'Alliance Française, qui rassemble des femmes issues de la bourgeoisie de Melbourne. Bonnes enseignantes mais piètres gestionnaires, les deux soeurs doivent fermer leur école. Mais l'Alliance Française du Victoria est une institution bien établie lorsqu'en 1892 Berthe Mouchette, ve
uve depuis huit ans, quitte Melbourne pour Adélaïde avec sa soeur. Elle y restera trente ans, période prospère où elle expose ses oeuvres et jouit d'une excellente réputation dans les milieux mondains d'Adélaïde.
On retrouve les deux soeurs en Inde pendant les premières années du vingtième siècle, s'intéressant à la théosophie et faisant de la randonnée jusqu'en Himalaya ! Après le décès de sa soeur à Adélaïde en 1922, Berthe Mouchette regagne la France où elle meurt en 1928 en Normandie.
Aujourd'hui, on peut voir une des toiles de Berthe Mouchette à la National Gallery of Victoria.
Depuis 3 ou 4 semaines, je consacre 15 minutes par jour pour m’entraîner à réciter mon poème. Il est très bien, mais il y a une section qui est plus difficile à interpréter. C’est bientôt mon tour !
For the last 3 or 4 weeks, I set aside 15 minutes per day to practice my poem. It is really nice, but there is a section that is a bit tricky to perform. It is almost my turn!

The poem I am reciting is called Yaté, from Céline Fuentes. It is a story about exploration. I really like it. I like learning French. I try to practice 10 minutes every day.
Le poème que je vais réciter s'intitule Yaté, de Céline Fuentes. C'est un récit sur l'exploration. Il est très bien, et j'aime apprendre le français. J'essaie de m'entraîner 10 minutes par jour.
