Parent Network Meeting: Comprehension Workshop to be presented by Leanne Winning
August 12th - 6.30-7.30pm in the library (see attached flyer)
My Last Hoorah!
In week 4 I will be presenting at the Parent Network Meeting for the final time. Many parents across the school have requested that I conduct a session around comprehension to help parents understand comprehension strategies and advise how they can help their children at home. Staff recently had a Pupil Free Day with Sheena Cameron (an expert and author from New Zealand) about the explicit teaching of comprehension so the timing seems perfect to hold this particular session.
During the night I will discuss 'The Big 7' of comprehension. I will explain what you can do at home to help your children understand what they are reading. I will highlight the difference between decoding and reading for meaning and will explain how teachers measure and monitor comprehension to inform their teaching. The relationship of comprehension to fluency, oral language and vocabulary will be emphasised. I will explain how we read different texts differently, and I will make links to how we comprehend text in everyday life and demonstrate how we can help our children to think more about what they are reading in authentic ways.
This will be an interactive, thought- provoking and refreshing look at the role parents can play in the development of their child's reading. There'll be activities, a 'giggle or two' and the session is guaranteed to challenge your thinking (and lessen the guilt parents often feel about 'needing to do more' at home). Come along and have some fun while learning about your child's comprehension needs!
One of those sessions you do not want to miss!
This will be the only parent session I will be presenting this year and your final opportunity to hear me speak at Lockleys North Primary School. Fill out the attached flyer to secure your spot!
Coffee, tea and a light supper will be supplied.

Future Canteen Service
At the Governing Council meeting last term, the main agenda item was the TopShop. Governing Council is committed to involving the school community in any future planning to ensure we are able to provide a service that meets the school community needs. To facilitate this, Governing Council would like to invite community members to attend the next Governing Council meeting. This will be an opportunity to put forward ideas and discuss possible future models:

As a temporary option during the consultation and planning process we will be offering a lunch order service through Vilis. This will occur on Monday and Friday. Students need to bring their lunch orders to class as per the previous process. If you require order bags please see the Front Office. Please see below for the Villis menu.
2016 Enrolments
We are now looking at our enrolment numbers for 2016. To help this process run smoothly, if you have siblings starting next year and have not yet completed an enrolment form, please see the Front Office staff. If you know of families in or out of zone who are looking to enrol, please urge them to contact us about the enrolment process. This will enable us to determine how many families, who reside out of zone, can be offered a position at Lockleys North Primary School.
Materials & Services Fees 2015
During the holidays letters were sent to families for outstanding Materials and Services Fees. These fees are overdue. Please make payment as soon as possible. Outstanding fees will be referred to DECD Debt Recovery.
