Out and about with Mr Walsh

Principal Report

We were excited to welcome back our students on Wednesday to start term 3 following 2 days of inspiring, impactful and purposeful professional learning through our Berry Street Education Model training. It has been great to see our students settle into their classroom and yard routines with a focus on connection and support of each other. We again look forward to a busy and eventful term 3 full of rich experiences and opportunities and continuing our planning for whole school based events.

We hope that all of our students had a restful break and it was definitely exciting to hear of the many interstate and international travels.

We have some new families starting with us this term and we would like to welcome the Bigmore, Mussetti and Walker-Donnelly families to our Surfside community.

With the return to normal operations we are still well aware as we head into term 3 that there is still a large amount of illness in the community so please continue to be up to date with current recommendations and supports within our local community to maximise health.

Our students have been busy in the first week on the sporting field and displaying a sustainable focus. If this is what our students are doing in the first 3 days we are all looking forward to an exciting term 3.

State Cross Country Championships - Yarra Glen

After 4 qualifiying events Freya and Sofia headed on the long journey to Yarra Glen to participate in the State Cross Country Championships. It was an overcast and cold morning but the course was in good shape with some gentle hills and soft surfaces - perfect for cross country running. Both students were up against the best in the state and performed at an exceptional level. Sofia participated in the 9/10 multiclass event and finished first in her category securing the gold medal and state championship. A well done to Freya and Sofia and a thank you to their support crew on the day!

Keeping our community COVIDSafe

The Victorian Government, Department of Health Services and The Department of Education continue to have specific measures in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our local community. We can all do our part in the following ways:

We have the following in place at Surfside PS to ensure the health and safety of our school community as advised by the Department of Education.

  • Students and staff are recommended to undertake a Rapid Antigen Test if they are displaying symptoms. (These tests will no longer be allocated to students but will be made available to close contacts, symptomatic families or as requested - please contact the office on 5256 1411 for further support)
  • Families are required to notify the school if their child has tested positive for COVID-19 or is identified as a household close contact
  • Students, staff or visitors can continue to attend school if considered a household close contact. Household close contacts aged 8 and over are required to wear a mask when indoors and undertake Rapid Antigen Testing for 5 days during the 7 day period
  • We will continue to notify families of a positive case if they attended school while infectious
  • Continue good health and hygiene practice by washing hands regularly, coughing or sneezing into your elbow and using hand sanitiser regularly.
  • Improving ventilation is one of the most effective measures to keep education settings safe. All classrooms and rooms at Surfside Primary School are installed with an Air Purifier
  • When unwell it is essential that you remain home, seek medical advice and be tested if required.
  • Ensure 1.5m physical distancing when required.
  • Victorians aged over 5 years are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccinations are available at state vaccination centers, participating GP clinics, pharmacies or community health services. Please chat to your local GP for more information.

For further support please visit the DHS Coronavirus webpage

The current guidelines in place are fluid and we will communicate as soon as any changes occur. If you require further clarification please read the below attachments or contact the administration office for further support on 5256 1411.
