Teaching and Learning

Room 3

On Wednesday 3rd November, the three year 1/2 classes (room 3, 4 and 5) went on an excursion to the Old Adelaide Gaol, Road Safety Centre and Tulya Wardli (Bonython Park). We learned about the history of the gaol, the first governor and got to see what prison conditions were like since settlement. The visit to the Road Safety Centre involved practicing basic road safety rules to ensure that we can use our scooters and bikes in a safe manner around the school and our houses.

Here are some photos and recounts from the Room 3 children to share what they learned on our adventure.

Did you know that over the years some of our students have had to the opportunity to write to some students from ‘Smile English School’ in Japan?

Room 9 & 10 have been busy preparing some New Year cards to send to these students. The Japanese may not send very many Christmas cards, but they do send a lot of special postcards called Nengajo’ that are delivered on New Year's Day. New Year is a very special holiday in Japan - it's probably the biggest item on the calendar of annual events.

These cards will often feature the Zodiac Animal for the coming year. Can you guess what the animal is? We hope we receive our replies by the end of this term!

Science News

Last week the Junior Primary classes got to see some sizzling potions in action! We mixed bicarbonate soda, dishwashing liquid, food colouring and vinegar in a jar and watched a chemical reaction take place. The students learnt about hypothesizing and predicting what they thought would happen. Then they watched the chemical reaction take place and discovered that it was an irreversible change. You could try this at home again and see what happens if you add more or less vinegar to the mixture.

NRM - Climate Change Expo

Room 9, 10 and 12 have been working diligently on a project that will encourage bees to enter a space in our school. They researched why bees are important and how climate change affects bees. They then designed a space in the school using Minecraft as a tool to demonstrate their learning. 7 students from Room 12 (Bayley, Tyler, Max, Leonie, Leila, Maggie and Katelin) attended the NRM Climate Change Expo at Thebarton Community Centre. They shared their presentation with 7 other schools across Adelaide. They got some good feedback from industry experts and had a wonderful day learning about climate change. What a great opportunity! Well done everyone!
