Year 5/6 News

Wellbeing

It has been wonderful to see the children re-engage in on-site activities, working collaboratively to develop ideas.

In Wellbeing, our Year 5's are currently exploring their own personal strengths and leadership qualities. They are investigating their traits and how they demonstrate leadership in their lives.

While our Year 6's are currently engaged in a Secondary School transition program which focuses on the exciting upcoming changes of secondary school.

Problem-Based Learning

Over the past fortnight, students have been exploring the history and background of various countries around the world, including aspects of culture, religion, climate, language and indigenous perspectives. Students have worked on locating geographical information on topographical maps and other sources of data driven information. With this knowledge, students have worked in groups to create their own city. Mapping out the necessary infrastructure required within their city spaces and how the physical terrain and natural environment might impact how their city is constructed. This task is designed to promote investigation and research, lateral thinking and problem solving skills, in order to support a ‘bigger picture’ perspective towards geographical space, place and interconnection.

Literacy

For the last fortnight in Reading, students have been engaging in literature circles to explore texts more deeply. This was intended as an interactive way to read and begin analysing and exploring stories. Students have worked together brilliantly and explored roles including a Leader, a Word Finder/Clarifier, and a Summariser. This has been a particularly fun way back into reading with the focus in 5/6K being on reading emotions of characters as we navigate tricky feelings within ourselves and others during the transition back to school.
