St John's Chickens
Our gorgeous chickens have begun laying eggs regularly. We think that 4 of them are now laying and they are bringing great joy to all of our students and staff. The Sustainablity Team have chosen their names from all of your entries. Their names are:
Gertie, Buttercup, Karen, Junior and Nibbles.
FRESH EGGS
We would like everyone to have the chance to take some delicious fresh eggs home to their families. In order for the chickens to be sustainable, we need to sell the eggs so that we can buy food, shell grit, straw and anything else they may need from the proceeds of egg sales.
We are going to sell the eggs through a raffle. Each morning there will be students available in the passive play area to sell tickets. Each family has the opportunity to buy one ticket for $1 and will go into a fortnightly draw. At assembly we will draw out as many tickets as there are cartons of eggs. Then we will begin to sell tickets for the next fortnightly raffle.
WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAY ROSTER
We are giving some lucky families the chance to look after the chickens over weekends or school holidays. All you need to do is let them out of their chook house and into the run in the mornings and put them back before night falls, check their water and food and collect the eggs. The eggs that you find are yours to take home. How lucky!
If your family is interested in being on the chook roster please email Melinda at mkerwin@sjmitcham.catholic.edu.au with your preference of weekends or school holidays. Please include the dates you are available and can commit to. If you would like to be rostered on the holidays also include the number of days you would like to do between 2 - 5 days.
Weekends - keys and instructions will be available to pick up from the school on Friday afternoons and are to be returned to the office Monday morning.
School holidays - there will be a copy of the roster with address and phone numbers so you will know who you are getting the keys from and who you will drop them off to next along with some staff numbers in case of emergency.
EGG CARTONS
If anyone has empty egg cartons they could bring into school that would be greatly appreciated.

Bebras Challenge - STEM
During remote learning in Term 3, Years 3-6 students at St John’s participated in the second round of the Bebras Challenge. Special Thanks to Melinda Kerwin, Learning Support Officer, for all her hard work in preparing and coordinating this challenge for the students.
Many students in primary and secondary schools throughout Australia took up the digital technologies challenge and worked individually, in pairs or small groups to solve a variety of problem solving tasks involving pattern recognition, coding, algorithms and logic. This program is organised through Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Education and Outreach program as a Digital Careers initiative that aligns with our STEM program and focuses on computational thinking.
We are extremely proud of all of our students who particpated and the many outsatnding results achieved. At assembly next week we will present certificates to those students who received a Credit, Distinction or High Distinction.
Years 3 and 4
Distinction: Gabi Villalon, Sebastian Adams, Lachlan Hanson, Alexander Aile, Lucas Gilbert, Ethan Joe
Credit: Dylan Rundle, Evie Godfrey, Tyler Rundle, Bella Clifford
