News from Matt Di Salvo

Head of Sport

CISSA Sport

The College CISSA teams have continued their good form in the last three rounds against Trinity Bay State High School, Cairns State High School, and Peace Lutheran College. Saints contested four fixtures against Trinity Bay with the AFL fixture being washed out and rescheduled to a later date. Our basketball team got back into the winner’s circle with a strong 18-point victory whilst our football, touch football and volleyball teams continued their good form with solid wins.

Week 1 of Term 2 saw us take on our arch-rivals, Cairns High, in four games with the volleyball fixture being postponed to later in the season to ensure the availability of Peninsula players. Our AFL, football and touch football maintained their dominant, unbeaten records for the season with convincing victories. While our basketball team suffered a 72-54 defeat against their highly fancied opponents. Our Week 2 fixture against Peace Lutheran was an uninterrupted round with all five teams contesting. We secured four victories in this fixture with the basketball team going down in a nail-biter by 3 points. In Week 3 we take on St Andrew’s in a home fixture. Good luck to all of our teams!

MGS Invitational Hockey Tournament

The senior hockey team has recently returned from the Melbourne Grammar School Invitational Hockey Tournament. Last year we won the tournament and were looking to defend the title. Nine new faces replaced boys that had graduated from last year’s winning team. The level of competition was extremely high, and St Augustine’s had to fight hard against strong competition.

During the pool stages Saints lost two games which led toa third-place finish. This resulted in a cross over 3rd v 4th match against St Kevin’s. The game was evenly matched at full time and went to penalty shoot outs (PSO). Saints won the shoot out 2-0 thanks largely to some excellent keeping from Kael Newcombe. This resulted in a final game against Scotch College for 5th place. Once again, a 2-2 draw at full time went to PSO which the boys did well to win 4-2.

A fifth-place finish from 12 of the best hockey schools from Western Australia, Victoria, South Australia and the ACT is an exceptional result. It was a great opportunity for our boys to play against some quality opposition from other states and to be invited to an elite tournament.

Many thanks to Mr Di Salvo and Mr Egan who coached and managed the boys during the tournament.
