THE ARTS

News from Samantha Olding

Head of Arts

The arts are alive at Saints with wonderful opportunities for students in 2023.

Visual Arts

Our Year 10 Visual Art students recently participated in an excursion to Mossman Gorge. The excursion provided opportunities for the boys to draw and take photos of the landscape. Many thanks to our Visual Art teachers Ms McGovern and Ms Almond, our arts assistant extraordinaire Ms Doolan for organising this excursion and Mr Mole for driving our students and staff safely. It was an exceptional excursion.

William Imhoff, in Year 9,  is a participant in the Receive and Respond Artistry Art Exhibition. Eighty students applied, but only 30 applications were accepted including William's. He created a pottery piece last term. William has been paired with a student from another school where both students will respond to each other’s artwork. This exhibition is on at the Courthouse Gallery in Abbott Street from 6pm Friday 26 May until 18 June. Feel free to place this date in your calendars. We wish William all the best!

Drama

There are some amazing initiatives taking place at Saints with Drama. Our inaugural Drama Club has just begun. The club meets every Wednesday after school, from 2:45 to 4pm, in McLaughlin Theatre. The club is open to all students wanting to perform in an all-boys production and learn the art of backstage. The club's work will culminate in the production of Treasure Island in Week 1 of Term 4. Ms Ballard and I are incredibly excited to produce and direct this play for our students. A reminder that the Combined Saints Youth Theatre is running every Monday after school at St Monica’s. If you or your son would like further information about either club, please contact our Drama teachers, Ms Ballard or me.

Film & TV

Our new in-house competition for junior students, School Shorts, is well on its way. So far, 10 teams have entered our film competition which is an exceptional response! Students who have nominated will be invited to a meeting next Tuesday 2 May to receive their senior student mentors and extra information about filming requirements. In these meetings, our juniors will speak and work with senior Film and TV students to create their films. Films must be a minimum of 45 seconds and a maximum of five minutes, must be rated PG and can be of any genre. The first prize winner in each category will receive a $200 voucher from your group’s choice of JB HiFi, Zing, EB Games or Event Cinemas.
