Inklings Extension – English (Reading and Writing)

This term we are excited to commence weekly English extension groups in reading and writing. These groups are called the Inklings and taught by Mrs Jaeger. Lessons will include extension in reading and writing for some students in Years 3 to 6 with a focus on wide reading and the composition and crafting of imaginative texts. There will also be reading extension for some Year 1 and 2 students. Students may swap in and out of these groups depending on their learning needs.

When our amazing new library is completed later this year the Inklings lessons will be held in the library and students will be surrounded by a wide range of new books they can read, discuss and enjoy. Until this space is available students will visit the temporary library to borrow and enjoy the many new books being purchased.

Kinder

This week we had another focus on syllables. We consolidated our learning by counting syllables using a multi sensory approach.

Multisensory instruction is a way of teaching that engages more than one sense at a time. Multi sensory tasks help children to learn a particular topic easier because they have multiple avenues to make connections with the concept they are learning.

The first way, Mrs Quilliam showed us a picture and we hopped the syllables on the hopscotch. The number we landed on told us how many syllables were in the word.

The second way, Mrs Hull showed us some pictures and we ‘clapped’ out the syllables using the different instruments.

Prep

Students in Prep Bluegum have been very busy this term learning many new things. In literacy, we’ve learnt to identify letters and their corresponding sounds. In science, we’ve learnt about what happens to objects when we apply push and pull forces to them. Most recently in maths, we’ve learnt about sequencing. We have learnt vocabulary words such as ‘first’, ‘then’, and ‘next’ which we can use to describe the order of events in a sequence. Last week, we drew the events that happen in our morning routine -from when we wake up to until we get to school. It was great fun!

Grade 1

We are busy working on being learners and being respectful in Grade One, as well as settling into our new routines. Everyone is trying their best and that is always wonderful to see.

Last week in Religion we spoke about the celebration of St Patrick's Day. We learnt about St Patrick, his story and the way he taught others about God and Jesus. We are all trying to live our lives like Jesus each day, and especially throughout Lent, so we found it interesting to hear about St Patrick and his life. We also spoke about the special people called Patrick that we know, including Ronan's little brother!

We took part in a guided drawing of a shamrock and worked so well to fill them with patterns and colour them in green. Please enjoy a sample of our art work!

Grade 2

Grade 2 have been taking their learning outside on a Thursday afternoon. We will be exploring many different learning areas and consolidating the learning we have been doing inside the classroom in a creative, outdoors, hands-on way. We have started by focussing on working together, sharing resources and solving problems. The children have shown great enthusiasm and have begun showing a greater ability to work together.
