Junior School

Another busy week of Term 1 is done – and what a week it’s been!

Congratulations to all of the students who have finished their NAPLAN tests – I am enormously proud of our Year 3 and Year 5 students who took these in their stride. Students managed any feelings of nerves by being positive, they managed the odd tech-frustration by being patient and they kept these tests in perspective. Thank you to the staff who helped with the big job of administering these tests too – across three campuses, this was a big job!

We also celebrated “Harmony Day” with an orange-hued day on Tuesday. This day is a great day to notice and appreciate the diversity amongst our community, and of course more broadly across Australia. Classes read books, did craft, writing and art to celebrate this important day.

A major highlight of the calendar is Grandparents Day and this was a HUGE hit at both Springwood and Wentworth Falls Junior campuses this week. Our grandparents are truly the best – they enjoyed our concerts, visited classrooms and spent up big at the Book Fairs! Thank you to all the staff for their efforts in putting together Grandparents Day, in particular to our talented Music teachers Mrs Lewis, Mrs Cooney and Mr Forbes. We truly do look forward to sharing our learning with our families and honouring the important place Grandparents have in our families and communities.

Another favourite night of mine is the Stage 3 Performing Arts Soiree. What a brilliant night we had on Thursday night – our students are so talented! We enjoyed singing, a variety of instruments being played, meaningful movement pieces with masks and hilarious renditions of ‘Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes.’ Not only is the talent of the students on display, so too is their encouragement of each other, their enthusiasm, their courage and their sense of agency. Congratulations to Stage 3 Yarramundi and the amazing Mr Forbes.

We’ll see more of parents in the coming weeks – we have interviews planned, we have Easter hat parade (get your recycled bits and pieces in!) and Easter Chapel to look forward to. I hope to see many parents over the coming weeks as we finish off a wonderful start to the year.

BMGS Swish finished the season at the top of the ladder. They played the Alley Oops, who are last on the ladder and won 40 to 1. The mercy rule was applied early on in the game, which allowed the opposition to get the ball down their end without any defending. The boys had lots of runs at goals and were able to quickly clock up a decent number of baskets. The boys will now play the team who is 4th on the ladder for a place at the grand final in two weeks’ time. We wish them all the best for their game next week and hope to hear some positive news. Thanks to Dillon for all his time and effort this season.

The Slam Dunks had a bye and their season has officially come to an end. What an incredible effort for this team though. They played each week with grit and determination, knowing that a win was most likely out of reach. They have improved immensely over the season with Mrs Lord as their coach. I know Mrs Lord is hugely proud of the girls, as am I. The season was hard for them but despite that, they held their heads high and gave it their best and that is all we ever expect from our Grammar students. Thanks to Mrs Lord for her expertise and her ability to make this season an enjoyable one for the girls.

BMGS Raptors played the Bench Warmers and won 10 to 4. Sebastian N, Sebastian O, Alexander and Christian were the goal scorers in the game. They also played the Not Ballerz and lost in a close came 2 to 0. There was a lot of great defending and they had opportunities at goals but unfortunately the ball just didn’t go in.

BMGS Blue Whales played the Night Furies and Mariella scored her first basket which was a result of an awesome pass from Hugo. Unfortunately, they lost 6-2. With only four players on the court, the odds were stacked against the team but they still tried their best. The team did an amazing job defending but the ball just wouldn’t go in for them. They also played the Bench Warmers and lost 6-2. Hugo was our goal scorer but again, with only four players, they were tired.
