Around the school grounds

Young Person Plan for the Planet (YPPP) Vertical garden

Over the two years of COVID, students have been planning to build a vertical garden using native plants.

The student team researched, corresponded with the school leadership to find a perfect spot for this vertical garden taking into consideration sunlight, rain and other factors such as accessibility to design this vertical garden.

It was decided by the team to engage the wider school community throughout this process and to use recycled components as much as possible in the construction of this Vertical Garden.

The students followed the design process and through prototyping decided to use 1.5 litres of soft drink bottles.

The school community was invited to send used and empty bottles which were then collected.

Through further prototyping it was decided to use the lower half of the bottles.

Wooden discarded sleeper planks were obtained by one of the team members which were then used to organise the plastic bottles.

Further prototyping allowed the team to finalise the number of plastic bottles on each sleeper.

Through earlier grants and prizes won the student teams were able to purchase native plants after consulting our own conservationist.

Students worked over lunch times throughout 2022-23 to prep and mount the bottles securely and plant the plants in the bottle pots.

Today the vertical garden is almost done with only a few more sleepers to be mounted.

This project would not have been possible without the persistence of Tarnie Jones and Manishka Bopitiya (2022 batch) who not only sourced the wooden planks/ sleepers during Covid lockdowns but persisted with the construction encouraging all YPPP team members.

This year's team continued these efforts and ensured that the project continued and was completed as soon as possible   Many thanks to Ben Mogford, Mazzy Murray and Darren Murray for their huge support and to the awesome YPPP and sustainability team

Tile mural outside J8 in STEAM Courtyard

This amazing tile mural in the STEAM Courtyard is still in progress - awaiting on a frame and grout.

This was funded by our Friends of Performing and Visual Arts (FOPAVA) parent group.

The tiles were made by Ms Abrahams' Year 7 & 8 students.  They are personal tiles, each student designing the composition, subject matter and glaze colour palette based on their individual interests.
