REFLECTION

The Passion of St. John the Baptist - August 29th.

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”  ~ Mt 16: 24-25

This week we we celebrate the Passion of St. John the Baptist.  Saint John the Baptist was strong enough to speak the truth, knowing the end result could be his death.

John constantly preached and practiced penance.  Before Jesus’ Baptism of the Holy Spirit, Saint John preached a different baptism, a baptism of penance.

If we practice penance in our lives, we will be strong enough spiritually to stand up for the Truth, who is Jesus.

St John the Baptist was the last prophet of the Old Testament,  killed by a corrupted King. St  John never stopped bearing witness to the truth., whose eyes saw that Truth was fully revealed in Jesus, the one whom he proclaimed the "Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world." (John 1:29) St. John the Baptizer was a simple man. His conscience and the Holy Spirit urged him to throw convention to the wind. He paid dearly for it. As Christians we inherit the abundant fruit of his daring and liberating choices. The way he exercised the great gift of his human freedom instructs us in exercising our own.

WE PRAY

O God,

You raised up St John the Baptist

to prepare a perfect person for Christ.

We call upon St John’s intercession to properly

prepare us with a true sense of repentance to receive

Your grace and salvation.

Make us faithful to truth and justice,

as You did Your servant,John the Baptist, herald of

Your Son’s birth and death.Lord, may You

increase Your life within us.

Amen.
