Classroom News - Year 6

Mr Garraud & Mrs Walters

English

We have continued our work with informative texts and have now moved on to explanations. This week's Big Write has the theme of Asia so that students can use the knowledge they have built up during our Geography lessons.  Talk homework went out on Monday to allow students to conduct research to support their Big Writes. We have practised our  explanation writing by undertaking research and note taking to build our background knowledge on water towers and we wrote an explanation using this research earlier in the week.

Students have been developing their ability to apply higher levels of punctuation in  writing and looking at how good authors are able to do this.

Maths Madness

It was been a solid 5 weeks of learning all about Fractions: what is fraction, equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting fractions, multiplying fractions, finding a fraction of a quantity... phew! These are foundational concepts moving into High School and very important to the building blocks of the Year 6 curriculum. Overall, we have been very pleased with the students progress in the concept - one that can be tricky and take some time to consolidate.

We are now moving into exploring decimals. We are asking that in your daily life, conversations and travels WHEREVER you see or hear a fraction or a decimal - point it out. Fractions and decimals are used so frequently, and these would be great teaching moments for you to assist your child to continue to build and consolidate real-life applications of this mathematical concept.
