Independence Centre

Curriculum

Selamat siang and welcome back to Term 4! We are SO looking forward to getting back to school next week, but in the meantime, we have an exciting last week of Remote Learning in preparation for our return!

This week in Literacy we are beginning to look at our new Independence Centre novel - The Glimme by Emily Rodda. Students will be able to listen to recordings of the chapters in their daily slides. You might like to ask them what the story is about or what they think will happen next! We will practice taking on different roles, such as the Predictor, the Summariser and the Questioner. We will also be setting our new SMART goals for the term. Now is a great time for students to think about things they have found challenging in their learning this year, and establish a goal with strategies to help them achieve it. We want students to think carefully about the strategies they will use to reach their goals so they can track their progress over the term. These goals will be posted to Seesaw later this week!

In Maths this week, we are using our knowledge of fractions, decimals and number lines in a mini-project! There will be a focus on scaled number lines, as we deepen our understanding of how to position numbers in relation to many different values. The structure of Maths this week is a little bit different to last term. If students have any questions at all the best place to be is the daily Maths Masterclass at 10:30. This is for all students who would like to ask questions or interact with others as they complete their tasks.

Our Guided Inquiry for this term is around forces and machines, we will be working towards creating our very own Balloon-Powered Cars! This week, students will conduct an experiment at home. They will need to design and construct their very own parachute for an object. We encourage students to be as creative as possible with the materials they have available to them. This might include Lego, tissue or toilet paper, kitchen items or toys. Once they have constructed and tested their parachute, they will need to reflect on their process and features of their design. We hope this is an engaging start to our science-based unit!

Once again, we remind students to aim to keep working for the allocated times for each activity. If they finish early we have provided a range of ideas and activities they can continue on with. We also have a list of strategies and activities for students and parents looking for a next step. These can be found in the previous newsletters and on the MPRPS Learning From Home website which is linked below in the reminders section. We also suggest using a timer to help show how long they have been working for, and how much more time they could be using.
