Welcome everyone

Term 4- Return to site

Welcome back to Term 4 and to onsite learning for all our Year 3-6 students! Everyone is really excited to be back onsite. Schools were remote learning for a long time so it is lovely to be able to interact in real life with our students who are loving the opportunity to be social and active again. Staff are really proud of the 3-6 students and their continued enthusiasm and positivity!

Writing Superstars

The 3-6 students wrapped up the term explaining lots of different concepts in their explanation writing. It has been really fun trying to figure out how things work and linking our writing to science! Some students have explained how parachutes work to slow down for a safe landing and have tried out new designs to improve them while they were at it. Others have explained why it is important to follow the correct steps when making a milkshake to avoid disaster as well as how scissors and ramps work using forces. Our students always surprise us with the topics they write about.

Writing

This term students have started their writing with a bang! We have already begun looking at interesting examples of narratives and gathering ideas to write our own.

Online Incursions

The year 3 and 4 students have been enjoying some very exciting online incursions over the last few weeks. We were lucky enough to have the Mad About Science team demonstrate some really fun experiments and we even had the opportunity to follow along on our own.

The cartesian diver was a huge hit with many of our students.

This link gives instructions and button below shows a you tube example

We are really lucky to have the opportunity to participate in even more Mad About Science incursions this term. All 3-6 students will be participating in the Chemistry Chaos session. This time we will be in class with our teachers and the presenters will be online. We are really excited to have a go at some fun and interesting experiments!

In Maths

In other work we have looked at Capacity and Volume in Maths.

These photos show how engaging practical learning is for students.

Year  6 STEM (the Playing Card Challenges)

For the first week back at school students from Gr 6 watched a video about Bryan Berg the ‘World’s Greatest Playing Card Stacker’.  They were then challenged to see what they could create from a deck of playing cards, such as a structure that could carry weight, a bridge, a zig-zagging fenceline or a multi-storey structure.  One of the most amazing creations was a structure made out of playing cards that could carry the weight of a metal stool!

Staying Connected

Teachers have been continuing their connections with students and their families through three way conferences via WebEx. It valuable to see students reflecting with their parents on their remote learning journey and setting new goals for term 4. Teachers and students really connected during remote learning in lots of different ways as much as possible and it has been great to see that through the conferences.

We hope you enjoy the photos  and work samples supplied by our wonderful 3-6 students,

Kate Sykes for the The 3-6 NBC team.
