Years 7 - 9 Update
October 2020
No news from Year 9 who are of course back on Campus and getting back into learning routines.
As indicated in the last newsletter they have been selecting their Year 10 Courses and a link is included here with finalised course costs. In addition to the levies for Year 10 core subjects each elective has a levy and can also have an excursion component.
During the final week's of Term 3, Year 7 and 8 students across the college were extremely busy completing some amazing work and taking part in activities and online events. Before moving forward and shifting our focus to return to face to face learning, there was a great opportunity to reflect on the success that was remote learning for most students. A huge well done to all members of the school community.
We asked some of the students what it was good about being back and what they were looking forward to by end of year.
As you may have read in previous newsletters, over the course of Term 3, students in Year 7-8 explored diversity, identity and belonging through our HASS focus of Civics and Citizenship. Students researched and learnt about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, and the prominent links this has to identity and belonging.
We can join different areas of learning to build upon knowledge. For example, diversity, identity and belonging was further explored through Term 3 English lessons. In reading, students learned about identifying character traits and finding evidence to support ideas and beliefs. In writing, students were asked to do a character study, using the T.E.E.L framework (Topic sentence, Explanation, Evidence, Link). Topics for student’s essay writing, and character analysis were chosen through a text study of either ‘Rabbit Proof Fence’ or ‘Red Dog’.
DOWNLAOD SOME TERRIFIC WRITING ABOUT FILMS
Excursions and incursions often end a topic of study and brings together many of the strands that have been looked over a term. Project ROCKIT ran a workshop for us to lead positive change at school, online and beyond. Check out their philosophy and some of the programs they run using this link.
During the two workshops we had activities and discussions that focused on educating youth about respectful and suitable use of social media and other online platforms.
The 7 and 8 students found it to be a great program to be involved in. They have taken away some invaluable lessons, that will help them navigate online experiences for the next few years and beyond.
Feedback
Tom - “What I found interesting was, what you post on the internet may offend others, just because you and some friends think that it’s funny and they understand it’s a joke other people might not, and it could be hurtful. Also another thing I found interesting was that even if you delete your posts and you can’t see it, other people could have screenshotted it or shared it, once it's posted it's always there. Project ROCKIT has taught me that you have to be extremely careful online”
Sarah - “On 8 September, the year 7/8s had an incursion with the Project Rockit. During the workshop, we dove into cyber bullying and social media, learning that there’s things we can do to help those who are targeted. We also did lots of polls and Q&As based on what they were telling or showing us. One important message that was discussed, there's a real person behind every screen, every message and every photo, we need to be kind!”
It has been a long wait but students in 7 and 8 have returned to specialist lessons at the Geelong Industry Trade Training Centre at H[-Goldsworthy Campus.
The facilities are extra-ordinary and outstanding work can be completed there.
For the remainder of this term, students will continue to build on their knowledge of world history, through our learning focus of Medieval Europe, The Shogun era of Japan and The Spanish Conquest of the Americas. We look forward to keeping you all updated as the term progresses.
The Year 7/8s enjoyed a fun welcome back to STEM this week by competing in a ‘Lego Zipline Challenge’. They worked in teams to design a carriage out of lego to transport a lego figurine down a zipline. They were challenged to create a design that could smoothly and quickly run down the zipline without breaking when it reached the bottom. The winning team was the one who could score the highest points under the 3 criteria; speed, safety and aesthetics. It was great to see students testing their carriages and then quickly running back to modify their designs to make them work even better. Great design work and design thinking!
