Years 10 -12 Update

Year 10 News

This week in Year 10 we continue to look at student examples across the curriculum. This issue focusses on the Art room with some outstanding pieces of work.

Back in the art room!

There is a buzz in the Northern Bay art rooms with our year 10 artists back in their creative space doing what they love, creating! This semester they have been busy working on a major folio project that spans across term 3 and term 4.

Now, let’s hear from some of our artists, why they love creating art and a description of art they have created.

What do you like about creating art?

I like being able to have a physical version that has come through in my head. I like being able to show others exactly what I’ve been thinking’

VCE NEWS

Across all VCE subjects Year 12 Exam Revision is in full swing. This is a very important time for students to clear thoughts and consider how much knowledge they have in their chosen field of study. At this time it is important to gather thoughts and set processes in place to make sure they revise for the upcoming exams. We use lots of techniques to get ourselves organised and do some important planning that will help clarify thought.  Mind mapping is one technique and Hannah, Trixie and Mary unpack an essay question by looking at the different parts and questioning the questioning. This photo shows the ladies starting to mind map a response.

Year 11 Physics

As part of their studies in unit 2 Physics, students have chosen to focus on understanding aerodynamics, the science of why heavy things fly. They develop knowledge of the forces of flight, principles of lift and drag and how planes are controlled during stages of flight. On returning to school after remote learning, the students have designed and conducted an experiment to apply these principles, using paper planes.

After some initial testing of designs, students investigated either the weight of the paper plane or the angle of attack (how steep the plane is flying through the air). As part of this process, they created a detailed experimental design, identified how to record accurate and reliable data, conducted their experiment multiple times and will present their findings to the class as their assessment for this outcome. They have shown a detailed and thorough understanding of aerodynamics along the way. All through “mucking around” with paper planes! (and only one crash landed on the roof…)

Year 11 Textiles

Unit 1 and 2 Product Design and Technology - Textiles

During Unit 1 students studied sustainability and the production required them to recycle an old pair of jeans. Students took the opportunity to make a variety of items including a hat, a pencil case, a phone case, a small decorated shoulder bag and a backpack. Their next production involved redesigning an existing product. Students added their own flair to a duffle bag resulting in interesting elements such as pockets, reflective handles and water proof bags.

It is wonderful to have our students return and it will be an incredibly busy time for year 12 VCAL students who have a few weeks remaining of their course.

VCAL Centre Facelift

Over the holidays our VCAL centre underwent a facelift, with the arrival of new furniture and equipment to complement the applied learning program that occurs in our space.  Students were thrilled with the inclusion of new whiteboard tables which allow them to easily collaborate, brainstorm and plan projects with their peers, while also working towards our community goal of being environmentally friendly!  #paperfreevcal

The furniture is composed of learning tables with one space used as a whiteboard.

High bench style tables and bar stools make practical work much more productive.

The Coffee maker is installed and the future will see the construction of a wall with pinboard and display ability.

Making Masks to Maintain My school by Cooper

What Is NBC Doing?

All Northern Bay College Intermediate VCAL students are making masks for their school and community.

Northern Bay College (NBC) Goldsworthy, VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning)intermediate students came up with the good idea of making masks. They  are selling them for $5 each. Not only does that make it more affordable than other masks, but it's more convenient for our community to access.  By buying one  you'll be supporting the school and the students at the same time. These masks are being made for the students and staff, but the family of staff and students are more than welcome to order. The NBC VCAL intermediate students will put your order down and try to make it as fast as they can!

VCAL students started making the masks in July 2020 and they are still getting orders and staying strong. These masks are being made at school in the VCAL center in students’ class time and are available to purchase at NBC Goldsworthy campus on Goldsworthy Rd. Masks are making the masks with unused school materials and equipment such as sewing machines, leftover fabric and elastic. They also are getting their materials from the school community, by allowing donations of materials to help them or supply of materials if the person ordering wants a personalised design.
