Book Week 2020

It was a very different Book Week this year, but just as wonderful as always, as all the events had to be reimagined to fit into the Home Learning environment. It was a challenging and worthwhile effort, as the feedback received from students and parents has been very positive.

The week got off to a fun start with staff and students in the Primary School dressing up as their favourite book characters. It was great to see students keep their costumes on throughout the day, and Zooming with their various teachers incognito. Thank you to parents who no doubt helped their children with their costumes. The students looked fantastic!

The week’s events included the Fairview Book Character Parade, the Cumberland Book Week Quiz (winner - Ronell M 3T) and Zoom sessions by prominent Australian authors and illustrators including: James Hart, Adam Wallace, Louise Park, Nova Weetman, George Ivanoff, Jack Heath, Archie Fusillo and Emilie Zoey Baker. Students had a great time learning how to draw characters with James, discovering how characters are created and why certain book covers are chosen with Nova, getting tips on how to write and publish books with Jack, and being immersed into the world of slam poetry with Emilie.

Thank you to all the Library staff, teachers, support staff, parents and students who supported Book Week.

Here are some student thoughts on Book Week 2020:

Nathan R - 1J

On Monday I dressed up as Fart Boy from the book by Adam Wallace and James Hart. On Tuesday it was so cool. We got to draw with James Hart over Zoom and we learnt how to draw Fart Boy and a made-up character. It was so much fun!

Roman P - 4A

Book Week was a lot of fun. The authors showed us some fun ways to create pictures and taught us how to refresh our minds for new ideas.

Amber J - 5A

This week Aitken College celebrated Book Week. On Monday the Year 5 students dressed up as their favourite book character. I dressed up as Cat from Victorious. It was a very fun Zoom meeting seeing everyone in their costumes. On Tuesday we met Nova Weetman through an online author Zoom. She told us how she became a writer. It was very inspiring and I have borrowed some of her books as they sound very interesting. I am now reading her book called 'Sick Bay'. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did during Book Week!

Sahez S - 8P

I found Archimede Fusillo interesting, informative and inspirational.
