YEAR 5 CAMP REFLECTIONS

In the final week of Term 2, the Year 5 students were lucky enough to go to school camp.

This is a 5 day / 4 night camp. We went to the amazing Camp Coonawarra in Gippsland. It’s an adventure camp on a farm on a large property. There are many activities: giant swing, flying fox, wildlife walk, orienteering, high ropes and low ropes course, climbing wall, maze and much more!

We asked students to recall and write about their camp highlights – please read on:

Camp Coonawarra was so much fun but I'm only going to share two of my favourite activities. The flying fox was astonishing when you went across the lake.  The view was spectacular! At first, I was having second thoughts about going on the flying fox, but it turned out to be so much fun.  You should definitely give the flying fox a try when you go on Grade 5 camp. The Wildlife walk was very interesting.  We got to see different animals such as kangaroos, wallabies and birds. Camp Coonawarra was an awesome camp with lots of activities for you to do.

Camp Coonawarra was the best and only camp I have been to. I will share two of my favorite activities. I really enjoyed the campfire. The campfire was crackling and flaming. The best bit about it was that me and Lachlan (my friend) got sing a song around while walking around the fire. We also got to toast American oversized marshmallows. The second Activity I really enjoyed was the Zipline. The zipline exhilarating as you soared threw the air. You had to put on a harness which was puzzle in its-self. You had to where a backpack that contained carabiners which clips to the line. Camp was the 3rd best experience of my life.

Camp Coonawarra is a fun camp with loads of activities. One of my favorite activities was the giant swing. When you go on the giant swing you need to wear a harness, a helmet and flying goggles. When it is your turn you get attached to three ropes, then the rest of the group pulls a thick rope to raise you into the air. When you are happy with the height that you're at you yell stop! Then the countdown begins, as soon as the countdown ends you pull a small rope that releases one of the three ropes and you begin to swing. At first it is terrifying because there is a big, tall wooden pole a few meters in front of you that you feel like you are going to crash into but luckily you don’t and that was one of the many activities we did at camp.

Camp Coonawarra was AMAZING. It was the first school camp I have been to. Everyone was excited on the bus there. There were so many activities, it is like you can never get bored! My favourite activity was the giant swing because it was so high, and it is like you are touching the bright, blue sky when you swing. I was nervous and scared at the start and felt like I did not want to go but I told myself that you must try things to see if you like it or not because I might like it, and I was right. I loved it! Another thing I really enjoyed was playing in free time, like playing in the gaga pit. It was so fun and like dodge ball which I like. I also really enjoyed doing rock climbing, it showed trust and teamwork with 4 people holding the ropes while you climb up the wall. Camp Coonawarra was so much fun if only I can do it all again! Not only did I learnt stuff and be independent, It was the best week ever!

Jithmin

The best highlight of camp Coonawarra would the food and the activates because the activities were fun like the giant swing. The giant swing was very scary to me because it feels like I am going to fall. Another activity that I liked was the flying fox because you zipline over the lake and you start to feel like ton cruise when you drop the rope for the people to stop you. The food was delicious because there was different food every day and they had bacon too and on Thursday we had ice cream for dessert. The bus trip was nice too because there were songs that we could listen too.

Camp Coonawarra!

Camp Coonawarra was AMAZING! I got to do so many fun things! But I have to say my favourite thing was most definitely horse riding!!! I had a lot of fun and the name of my horse was Lilly! She was white with a beautiful lush blond main!

My second favourite thing was definitely the giant swing!!! I went right to the top!! I highly recommend it!

Natasha

This year I went to camp Coonawarra it was a BLAST! I went on the giant swing it was so much fun I loved it. The first two times I didn’t go to the top, but I knew I would regret it, so on the third try I went to the top, when I went there, I said to myself, “What did I get myself into this time?” But when I pulled the rope, I loved it! But the BEST part was when I found out I was in the same cabin as my friends. But luckily, I had slept, I didn’t just talk all night... but we were LOUD. But that was the best part of camp!!!

Lachlan

At Camp Coonawarra we did so many fun things. These are my two favourite activities. The Giant swing was so fun. It made you feel energetic, and it was a wonderful experience. You get 2 turns and I went to the top both times. The second activity I really enjoyed was the Flying Fox. Compared to the Giant Swing it was more relaxing. You could also get a better view. Overall, it was great and if you have not been you should be extremely excited.

Jonah

Overall, camp was awesome every activity was great, and I had the best time. The two best activities with a flying fox and the giant swing. Firstly, the flying fox the flying fox went across the lake from a hill. On it I went I went across like a starfish when we did it when I did it Finally the giant swing, the giant swing was amazing because you went so high. At first when you pulled the rope releasing you from the pole, there's a sudden moment of dropping which I found was a good way to face fears. To sum it up it was awesome.

Camp Coonawarra

At camp Coonawarra the activities are exciting. There are quite a lot of activities to choose from. For example; the flying fox and the giant swing.  On the giant swing you get two turns.  If you get scared on your first go, don't go all the way to the top just go near the top and on your second go just go all the way to the top.  When you go to the flying fox it may look scary but it's actually really fun.   Archery is also great fun and when you hit the board you feel very happy with yourself.

Camp Coonawarra

Camp Coonawarra was awesome! There were so many exciting activities. Some of the activities were the flying fox, giant swing, rock climbing, archery, wildlife walk, orientation and horse riding. My favourite activities were the flying fox and the giant swing. The flying fox was very fun because you get to be high up in the air and you get to zoom down incredibly fast over the lake. The giant swing was also incredibly fun as well. People had to pull you up, until you get as high as you want. Then you pull a short rope and suddenly....... YOU DROP!!! The feeling is so scary when you drop because it feels like the floor below you is gone and you're just falling to the ground. But it's not very scary. After the quick moment of scariness, you just swing incredibly fast and incredibly high, back and forth, and it’s soooooooooooooooooooooo fun!!!! At camp the food was also amazingly delicious!!! We had a very good cook called Garry. All the food was amazing, but I think dinner and desert were my favourite dishes. Dinner was always so delicious, and dessert was amazing!!! Every time after dinner, my mouth was always watering, waiting to see what we would have for dessert. And we would always have some yummy treat for dessert.

But overall, camp was very fun, and I would definitely go there again.

Thomas Camp Coonawarra was great, there was so many fun activities, but I will tell you my favorite ones. My favorite one was the giant swing because it feels like your own a theme park ride when you are on it. Also, because you get to go on it multiple times and it goes remarkably high. You and the other kids with you help pull the swing up for whoever on there to pull a rope and then start swinging. My second favorite one was trivia night. My group was called The Shady Potato’s. There were easy questions like who the horse’s name in toy story is, and who is this pig name is. There also were hard ones like name all countries that start with a and name all these sports brands. I was good at the geography and math's questions. The last question was naming all the car brands. When they told who won our group came 2nd. Camp was the best week in my life and wish I could go there again.

I had an exceptional time at year 5 school camp 2021. Camp Coonawarra is 3 hours away by bus and my favorite part was easily when we all went gliding across the glimmering lake on a flying fox. The view was amazing, and it felt just like flying. Another amazing time I had was being the one to volunteer going first on the giant swing. First I was dragged up by my classmates and then all that was left was to pull the orange cord... I pulled it and my whole body filled with thrill as I dropped backwards and fell into a heavy swing. And then, before I knew it the whole camp was over and I was left with wonderful memories...

Camp Coonawarra was amazing! I loved all the activities! So today I will tell you my two favourite activities at Camp Coonawarra. My first favourite activity was the giant swing! To go on the giant swing they gave you a harness, goggles and a helmet. When you got a turn on the giant swing you get put on three secure ropes while you're on the ropes the rest of the group pull a long thick rope that makes you go higher. Once you are happy with your height you shout STOP! Then you pull a little rope near your harness and your swing! The higher you go the more you swing, my belly did a somersault! You get 2 turns on the giant swing I went to the top on both turns, It was awesome! My next favourite activity was the campfire, all the grade 5s sat around a hot sizzling fire tasting enormous, delicious marshmallows they went all gooey! Did you know one of the grades 5s had a huntsman on his head and it was frightening! WE all sang a song made by the camp staff called You Can’t Ride in My Little Red Wagon. We yelled our loudest and at the end I lost my voice! It was fun. We all chatted to each other, and it was awesome. I loved how all the little bits of fire came up and disappeared into the night. I really loved the campfire, and I had a terrific time at camp!

Ellie

I had a great time at Coonawarra Camp, we did many activities and we had loads of fun!

At camp we did lots of activities in the daylight and every night we had a night activity. After our daylight activities we could play games or chat in our cabins or do an activity outside.

We had activity groups and my activity group did archery, hut building, labyrinth, climbing wall, flying fox, giant swing, wildlife walk, high ropes, low ropes and horse riding.

Our cabin was really loud, on the first night we got about 2 hours of sleep but the rest of nights we were sound asleep.

One of my favourite activities at camp was the flying fox, you had to walk up some stairs to get to the top of the lake but it was worth it! The view was brilliant and you whizzed along over the lake.

Our cook Gary was really nice and he made sure he cooked food that everyone could eat and he made sure he recognized everyone’s dietary requirements.

Every night we did a night activity, the first night we did a night hike and we saw kangaroos (or was it wallabies?) I am pretty sure I saw a wombat because I saw a dark shape slowly moving in the tall grass, but I got distracted with the kangaroos (wallabies?). The second night we did camp fire songs, we roasted marshmallows, sat by the fire and learnt a song called “You can’t ride in my little red wagon”. On the third night we had movie night and watched a movie called “Flubber”. On the last night we had trivia night, our group names was the “Peppa Piggies”. The last question f trivia night was name as many car brands as you can, that question was almost impossible! There were about more than 50 possible answers!

Ms. Millar really liked clean cabins so we had to keep our cabins clean and tidy all the way through camp and we had to keep it neat making sure we left nothing behind before leaving back to school. I had the best time at camp, I hope that next year we will be able to go to camp in Canberra!

Preeti

I loved camp! It was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I will tell you about my 2 favourite activities, one in the day and one at night. I loved the giant swing because it feels like you are flying and yes it does give your tummy a flop, but it is worth it. Technically, your group pulls you up using rope and you can choose how high you want to go. I went to the top. Then there is a little rope that you pull, and off you go! The best night activity was the campfire. We first sang some songs and one very fun one made by the camp staff called You can’t Ride in my Little Red Wagon at the top of our lungs. We also toasted the most delicious marshmallows. I lost my voice a bit and my clothes smelt like smoke. If you don’t like this camp them you are crazy! It is the best camp you could hope for. I really wish we will be able to go to Canberra next year for camp!

The best part of camp

I would say the best part of camp was the zip line, the zipline was super fun we got to zipline over the top of a lake from a huge hill there where heaps of duck's in the lake at that time.

You know what else was great, the giant swing, the giant swing was great it was big and exiting looking, but at first it was a little scary but then you get used to it.
